The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with the José María Arguedas Centenary Conference on October 28 - 29, 2011 The Hispanic Studies Graduate program of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Villanova University is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a conference in honor of the centenary of the prominent Peruvian novelist

, poet, anthropologist, professor and literary critic, José María Arguedas (1911-1969). To complement the scholarly sessions and roundtable discussion of his work, the conference features a rich cultural program about the cultures of the Andean region.
• Two special roundtable panels by invited presenters (details on the website)
• A dance performance by two Peruvian indigenous dancers accompanied by live music performed by indigenous musicians
• A presentation of the award-winning film, "Soy andina" (http://www.soyandina.com/ about dances and cultures of Peru) by its director, Mitchell Teplitsky and one of its protagonist, Cynthia Paniagua who will give a live presentation of some of the dances featured in the film.
• A book exhibit at Falvey Library with authors presenting their recent books on Andean studies.
• A musical performance by Edgar Zárate, nephew of the legendary Peruvian guitarist, Raúl García Zárate, and Fredy Roncalla.
• A reception sponsored by the Peruvian Embassy.
