Spring Garden Soup Society

Spring Garden Soup Society Feeding the hungry in Philadelphia since 1852 "Changing times made the direct distribution of food and fuel to Philadelphia's poor a more practical solution.

[From the SGSS website]

"Acting on a determination to supply food to the needy in the Spring Garden section of Philadelphia, a group of public-spirited volunteers
built and operated a soup house on Buttonwood Street from 1853 until it closed permanently in 1932. This objective drew broad financial support from individual donors as well as the city's business community. Bread, milk, and coal were

delivered regularly until 1960,
when the Society began to focus exclusively on home milk distribution. In the 1980's, again responding to practical realities in a changing world,
the Society began direct financial support of food service provided by a range of organizations serving the citizens of Philadelphia."

It was a beautiful day for our first visit to The Simple Way, a food bank (and so much more) in the heart of Kensington, one of Philadelphia's most challenged neighborhoods. Several SGSS board members met with Caz Tod-Pearson (pictured), who walked us through the facility and its history.

TSW recently received a special grant from the Society, and this trip confirmed the wisdom of that choice.

First ever SGSS board meeting via Zoom. That's what happens when our regular venue is Covid-closed. It was wonderful to hear updates from our supported organizations, most of which are going the extra mile to feed the hungry in Philadelphia, despite the challenging circumstances.

It is always a joy to reconnect with the good folks at Norris Square Senior Citizen Center, one of the agencies we support in their ongoing commitment to feed the hungry in Philadelphia.

During today's visit, Director Beth Butler and her staff once again made us feel very welcome, serving our board members a delicious lunch and providing a comprehensive update on the Center's activities.

Norris Square Senior Center is one of the organizations supported by the Spring Garden Soup Society. Board members Cindy Spurdle, Bill Hale, and John Dallas Bowers met with NSSC director Beth Butler, had an amazing lunch, and watched a fun Zumba fitness class work out to the strains of Old Blue Eyes.

SGSS board members Barry Washington, William C. Hale, and John Dallas Bowers visited Norris Square Senior Citizen Center earlier today. Director Beth Butler was kind enough to show us around their lush vegetable and herb garden.

It's always fun to reconnect with Beth and Program Coördinator, Sheila Mercado.
