*** RAINIER PD HAS RECEIVED REPORTS OF SKIMMING ***

What is "SKIMMING"?

Card skimming devices can be difficult to spot. They are typically installed on the outside of machines and look like they belong there.

"Skimmers" are high tech devises that are attached over the card slot and can record your card information. Sometimes a small camera will be installed nearby to record your PIN number. Artificial keypads can also be installed. The keypad can record your PIN number.

To avoid being "skimmed" follow some of these guidelines every time you use your card:

1. Do a quick scan before using any machine, check to make sure it hasn't been tampered with. If the graphics aren't aligned, or the card reader port doesn't light up like other card readers
nearby, go to a different machine.

2. Check the keypad. If the numbers are hard to press or feel thick, it might be because a false keypad was installed.

3. It something looks broken on the card reader don't use your card on that machine. Watch for loose parts. This might be an indication this machine was tampered with.

4. Block your PIN when entering the numbers on a keypad.

5. An alternative to swiping your card is paying by mobile wallet; Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, or Google pay. This form of payment is secure, and your credit card information will not be recorded by a skimmer.

6. Pay inside when getting gas.

7. Check your account regularly and sign up for text alerts from your bank.

8. To avoid any form of identification theft, never give your personal information over the phone. Call the bank directly if you receive a phone call from your bank regarding your account.
