Today, the North Carolina House of Representatives approved an anti-gang crime bill to combat violent crime, protect vulnerable victims, and equip law enforcement and prosecutors with stronger tools to keep our communities safe.

Jaleeyah’s Law, named in memory of 13-year-old Jaleeyah Tune, who was tragically killed in a gang-related shooting in Goldsboro last December, bolsters our state’s efforts to dismantle criminal organizations and get weapons out of the hands of dangerous individuals.

Among its provisions, Jaleeyah’s Law:

-Cracks down on firearm possession by criminal gang members.
-Creates tougher penalties for predators who recruit minors into gangs.
-Increases punishment for gang-related crimes.
-Gives investigators and prosecutors stronger tools to break up gangs and target organized criminal activity.

In Alexander County, collaboration was on full display.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC CEO Eric Aft joined Representative Jeff Zenger (NC-74) and Representative Blair Eddins (NC-94) for a visit with Morning Dew Farms, The Farmers' Daughter, and Hiddenite Community Helpers Food Pantry to talk about the powerful impact and importance of state funding used to buy fresh, locally grown products from NC farms, strengthening North Carolina agriculture while helping food banks and their partner agencies provide nutritious food to families facing historic levels of need.

Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed the Ratepayers Protection act. This legislation ensures that data centers pay for the energy infrastructure- not tax payers.

Key highlights of the bill:

-Making data centers pay their own way.
-Keeping the lights on and preventing price hikes by not retiring existing power plants before reliable replacement power is available.
-Protecting our national security from foreign adversaries controlling data centers.
-Defending private property rights by banning the use of eminent domain to acquire land for data center developments.
