The Smith County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the national “Click It or Ticket” seat belt enforcement campaign. We would like to remind everyone that seat belts save lives. Whether you’re traveling across the state or just down the road, every driver and passenger should be properly restrained every single trip.

Far too often, we see children riding unbuckled, improperly restrained, or not in the correct car seat because the trip is “just a short distance.” The reality is that many accidents happen close to home during everyday drives. Distance does not lessen the danger.

Children should always be secured in the proper car seat or booster seat based on their age, height, and weight, and every passenger in the vehicle should wear a seat belt at all times.

Taking a few extra seconds to buckle up could save your life — or the life of someone you love.

Click it. Every trip. Every time.

As National Police Week comes to a close, we proudly honor the brave men and women who continue to serve and protect our community every day. 💙🖤

Law Enforcement is not a job someone chooses for fame, recognition, or financial reward. It is a calling built on sacrifice, service, and a willingness to stand between danger and the people we love. It means missed holidays, sleepless nights, difficult calls, criticism from strangers, and carrying burdens most will never fully understand.

In today’s world, officers often face judgment from people who have never worn the badge, never answered a desperate call for help, and never had to make split-second decisions under pressure. False accusations, online rumors, and hateful comments can spread quickly, while the truth is often overlooked. Yet despite that, these men and women continue to show up every day because they care deeply about their communities and want a safer future for their children and future generations.

During this National Police Week, we remember and honor the officers across this nation who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. We also extend our gratitude to the families who stand beside our law enforcement officers through every long shift, late-night call, and uncertain moment. May God protect each officer as they put on the badge and walk out the door each day, and may He bring them safely home to their families at the end of every shift.

To all of our deputies, past and present, and to all law enforcement officers, we thank you for your sacrifice, your resilience, and your unwavering commitment to serving others. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and this community is safer because of you.

We don’t take for granted the men and women of Southern Pine Electric. When the lights go out, you show up in the rain, sleet, ice, snow, or storms and Smith County is stronger and safer because of it.

💛🖤🚓🚑🚒The voices you hear in an emergency are the ones you may never see, but are the heroes you will never forget.🖤💛🚓🚑🚒

During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week 2026, we want to recognize the incredible women and men behind the headsets. Our 911 Dispatchers answer around 10,000 calls each year, remaining calm in moments when others cannot, gathering critical information, and making sure help is on the way when it matters most.

They serve as the lifeline between our community and every responding agency, from law enforcement, fire, EMS, and beyond. They quietly coordinate the response to thousands of calls for service each year.

Thank you for keeping Smith County safe.

We are deeply saddened to share that a tragic accident occurred Saturday night in Smith County.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., the Smith County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one-vehicle crash with injuries on Highway 18 West near White Oak. Polkville First Responders and Smith County Emergency Management assisted at the scene. Preliminary information indicates that an adult male and his two children were traveling in the vehicle when it left the roadway and overturned on the shoulder.

The youngest child was in critical condition and was taken by ambulance to the Smith County Emergency Hospital, where the child was later pronounced deceased.

This is a heartbreaking loss, and our hearts go out to the family during this unimaginable time. We ask that you keep them lifted in your prayers and respect their privacy as they grieve.

We are grateful to our dispatchers, first responders, hospital staff, and all those who assisted on scene for their care, professionalism, and service during such a difficult call.

We also want to gently remind our community that, in situations like these, families should be notified before information is widely shared. Early reports are often incomplete, and investigations take time to determine the full and accurate details. Above all, compassion and respect should always come before being first.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation, including accident reconstruction.

No further information will be released at this time.
