District Attorney Ernie Lee is in Raleigh today at the North Carolina General Assembly, along with 39 other elected DA’s from around the state.

On behalf of the NC Conference of District Attorneys, these elected District Attorneys are meeting with legislators about pending criminal legislation, which would make fentanyl drug laws stronger in this state.

District Attorney Ernie Lee spoke with Senator Michael Lazzara, who is co-sponsor of Senate Bill 189, Senator Brent Jackson, Rep. Jimmy Dixon, Rep. Phil Shepard and Rep. George Cleveland.

“I appreciate their strong support for law enforcement in this district. We are advocating for criminal legislation, including stronger laws involving fentanyl and deaths by distribution of certain illegal controlled substances,” District Attorney Ernie Lee said. ⚖️

As president of the NC Conference of District Attorneys, it was my pleasure today to welcome United States Attorneys—Dena King, US Attorney Western District of NC;
Sandra Hairston, US Attorney Middle District of NC; and Michael Easley, US Attorney Eastern District of NC — to the 2023 Spring Conference of the Elected District Attorneys in Cary.

The US Attorneys spoke on federal legislation to deal with drug violence and how we can assist each other in prosecuting violent drug offenses.

This is a partnership aimed at combating gun and drug violence and making our state safer. ⚖️

The NC Conference of District Attorneys worked with Senator Michael Lazzara of Onslow County as well Senator Danny Britt of Robeson County and Senator Tom McInnis of Richmond County to strengthen the fentanyl laws of this state.

Senate Bill 189 was heard before a legislative committee on Tuesday at the NC General Assembly. This bill will toughen the laws for sell and delivery of controlled substances and strengthen and broaden the death by distribution statute.

I was honored to speak at a press conference along with Senator Lazzara and Vanessa Sapp, who is a strong advocate in our community for fighting against the sell of drugs.

As President of the North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys, I spoke at the press conference and later before a legislative committee and advocated for increasing penalties for death by distribution of dangerous drugs like fentanyl.

I appreciate Onslow County Sheriff Chris Thomas and Chief Michael Yaniero of the Jacksonville Police Department for speaking in support of the legislation. ⚖️

I was pleased to stand alongside my fellow elected District Attorneys at the NC General Assembly on Tuesday to advocate for the enactment of Senate Bill 189, which strengthens the fentanyl laws in this state. We have an epidemic of drug overdoses. This legislation will provide a tool for law enforcement and prosecutors to combat those who deal drugs. ⚖️
