Our favorite astronaut, three-time NC State graduate Christina Koch, is coming home to NC State Aug. 24-25. It’s one homecoming celebration that’s sure to be out of this world.

There’s much to celebrate about NASA astronaut and NC State graduate Christina Hammock Koch’s record-breaking experiences on the Artemis II mission in April. She became the first woman to leave low Earth orbit, and the first woman to travel to and around the moon. So when NASA called and asked if we’d be willing to serve as the anchor site for her upcoming visit to North Carolina, we obviously said, “Howl, yes.”

We’re perhaps most excited to celebrate the moments when Koch and her crew brought all of us together — as humans, as Americans, as North Carolinians and as a Wolfpack — as we followed along with their journey. Like she said during their space flight, “Ultimately, we will always choose Earth. We will always choose each other.” That’s a sentiment that we know our Wolfpack can get behind.

In that spirit, we’re filling her two days on campus, Aug. 24-25, with as many opportunities as we can to come together, celebrate her achievements and learn from her. Several of them will be livestreamed so our whole Pack can tune in, no matter where you are. Because once you’re a member of the Wolfpack, you never truly leave NC State’s orbit.

While technologies like the internet, radio and GPS were created for the military, they are now a part of our everyday lives. At NC State, researchers are working to advance and strengthen multifunctional ceramic materials beyond their current military use, transforming them into powerful tools for civilian applications.

Ceramics may seem unassuming, but they are capable of creating more than just pottery and porcelain. Over a century ago, scientists discovered the piezoelectricity effect - where ceramics generate electricity when put under pressure. This led to the creation of the first sonar devices during World War I, and NC State has been at the forefront of ceramics research since.

That's where Cheryl Xu comes in. Her work in NC State's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has pushed the boundaries of multifunctional ceramic materials and how they can be used. Xu and her team have created a radar-absorbent ceramic coating that could eventually replace the existing polymers used to cloak stealth aircraft. This new ceramic material is tougher and lasts longer against moisture, abrasive materials and extreme heat, opening doors for applications in the aerospace industry and beyond. http://ncst.at/Ovkk50ZwGMy

NC State has been granted a $20 million award from the National Science Foundation to integrate AI, robotics and autonomous labs in order to advance scientific discovery in chemistry and materials science research.

The research initiative is called Self-driving Platforms for Expedited Experimental co-Design in solution phase chemistry and materials science, or SPEED. It builds on NC State's leadership in “self-driving labs” — an emerging research model that combines AI and robotic systems to design, conduct and analyze experiments.

These systems use experimental hardware, real-time data streams and decision-making algorithms to build experiments that will inform the next. SPEED’s shared infrastructure will allow researchers from NC State, alongside partners at UNC-Chapel Hill and MIT, to pioneer solutions for a wide range of scientific and technological challenges.

“Through remote access, researchers and students can engage directly with advanced experimental infrastructure from wherever they are, creating new opportunities for institutions and communities that have not historically had access to these capabilities,” said Principal Investigator (PI) and Dr. R.J. Polge Term Professor for Excellence in Engineering Milad Abolhasani.

For North Carolina, SPEED will bolster economic growth, workforce development and industry engagement. For the United States, it will enhance our ability to discover and validate new, critical materials and molecules, supporting competitiveness in manufacturing, supply chains and emerging technologies. For the world, SPEED offers expanded accessibility to researchers and students, changing not only what we discover, but who gets to participate in discovery. Once again, NC State is at the forefront of both innovation and collaboration.

On June 24, 2026, Venezuela experienced an unprecedented pair of earthquakes within 39 seconds of each other. A massive 7.2 magnitude earthquake was quickly followed by an even larger 7.5 magnitude quake. The event, known as an “earthquake doublet,” has left the northern coast of the country devastated.

As the death toll has reached more than 4,000 people, researchers from right here at North Carolina State University are lending a helping hand.

“I have family there, I have friends there and I am from there,” Ashly Cabas, associate professor in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) said. “So it felt really personal. Then, the scientist in me kicked in, and I thought, ‘Oh my god. Two earthquakes 39 seconds apart? What happened?’”

Researchers are mining for metal with an unexpected tool.

The United States is currently seeking to support phytomining, the process of extracting valuable minerals using plants, and NC State's research is optimizing this unique approach. Rare earth metals are critical to defense and technological developments but are difficult to find in high concentrations of their pure form in nature.

Colleen Doherty, an associate professor of molecular and structural biochemistry at NC State and one of the lead investigators on the latest study, shared that while using plants to mine metals isn't necessarily new, phytomining for rare earth metals is a "a fairly new aspect of phytomining." Doherty and her team developed an ultraviolet spectroscopy technique that uses fluorescence to measure the concentrations of various rare earth metals in pokeweed, a resilient and native plant to North Carolina. Their approach proved successful in measuring levels of dysprosium, an element valuable to creating durable magnets used for a number of devices, and holds promise for measuring other rare earth metals. "The technique is critical for helping us determine the best time to harvest these plants to get the optimal concentration of rare earth elements." http://ncst.at/y0wm50ZqcA7
