✅ Flood Update – Smith County

All county roads and highways have reopened, and floodwaters have receded throughout the northern part of Smith County. However, SCR 106 in the southern portion of the county remains covered by water and should be avoided. Please use extreme caution if traveling in that area.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation during this flooding event. Thank you to all emergency responders, county crews, and road department personnel who worked to keep our communities safe.

⚠️ Please use caution if traveling this morning. Several roadways remain flooded, and water levels continue to rise in some areas.

Currently impacted:
Hwy 541 near the 3898 block at the bridge
SCR 563
SCR 131
SCR 106

We have already assisted with removing vehicles from floodwaters. Please do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Just a few inches of moving water can cause a vehicle to lose control or stall, putting you and emergency responders at risk. If you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around and find an alternate route.

Smith County Emergency Management and Smith County Sheriff’s Office personnel are out this morning checking road conditions and monitoring flooded areas. Please remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Never attempt to drive through a flooded roadway.

As of this time, all county roads and state highways in Smith County are open and passable with the exception of the following road closures:

🚧 SCR 559 (4060 Block)
🚧 SCR 563 at the bridges
🚧 SCR 502

Please continue to use caution when traveling, especially in areas that have received heavy rainfall. Never drive around barricades or through flooded roadways.

🚨 FLOODED ROADS ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS 🚨

Smith County Emergency Management urges everyone to use extreme caution while traveling during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding.

❌ Do NOT drive through flooded roadways.
❌ Do NOT attempt to cross water-covered bridges or roads.

Just a few inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle off the roadway, and it is often impossible to determine the depth of the water beneath the surface.

Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

If you encounter a flooded roadway, find an alternate route and report hazardous conditions to local authorities when it is safe to do so.

Your destination is never worth risking your life. Stay weather aware, slow down, and travel safely.

Please use caution if traveling on Highway 35 North. There are several flooded areas along the route in Scott County. Slow down, stay alert, and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways.

The National Weather Service in Jackson has extended the

* Flash Flood Warning for Northern Smith County in central Mississippi Until 245 PM CDT.

* At 1235 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 3 and 6 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing.

HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.

IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban
areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as
other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Forest, Morton, Mendenhall, Raleigh, Pelahatchie, Hillsboro, Polkville, D'Lo, Puckett, Harperville, Braxton, Pulaski, White Oak, Burns, Homewood, Johns, Branch, Cato, Martinville and Leesburg.

Several roads in the northwestern part of the county are beginning to flood due to ongoing heavy rainfall.

If you encounter a flooded roadway, remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles when drivers attempt to travel through flooded areas.

Please use extreme caution while traveling and avoid driving through water-covered roads.

⚠️ Flood Safety Reminder ⚠️

Heavy rain bands are expected to remain over our county for the next couple of days, which may lead to flooding on area roads. Rainfall will continue through the week, and conditions can change quickly.

If you encounter a flooded roadway, Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles. Never attempt to drive through water covering the road, as its depth and condition may be impossible to determine.

Please use caution while traveling and stay alert for flooded roads and changing weather conditions.
