NCSHP Expresses Appreciation to Partners in the Wake of Fallen Master Trooper Steven J. Perry's Passing

On Mar. 11, Fallen Master Trooper Steven J. Perry was laid to rest during a Celebration of Life Service held in his honor at the Shepherd's Church in Cary. The State Highway Patrol wishes to express our tremendous appreciation to the community members, loved ones, organizations, educators and extended law enforcement partners and emergency responders who came together to honor the life and legacy of Trooper Perry.

We wish to thank the NCTA Caisson Unit and Wake and District Pipe Band for their exceptional service. Thank you to Chic-Fil-A for donating food and refreshments throughout the visitation. We also extend our gratitude to the Cary Police Department, Cary Fire Department, Durham Police Department, Durham Fire Department, NCCU Police Department, State Capitol Police, Wake County EMS and Durham County Emergency Medical Services for their assistance with traffic control during the funeral service in Cary and subsequent procession to Beechwood Cemetery in Durham.

Additionally, we extend our sincere appreciation to The Shepherd's Church for graciously providing their Worship Center for the Celebration of Life service of Trooper Perry, ultimately affording us all the opportunity to come together and reflect upon his stellar career of service and devotion to his community.

“On behalf of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, we are immensely grateful for the overwhelming support from community members who have helped to encourage our grieving members who worked alongside Trooper Perry while also uplifting the Perry family as they grieve and cope through this difficult time of loss," said Colonel Freddy L. Johnson Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol. “I personally wish to thank everyone who had a role in Master Trooper Steven J. Perry's Celebration of Life service. His selfless dedication to ensuring North Carolina's roadways were protected along with the everlasting impact he had on his community will resonate in all that we do, and it is our duty to uphold the ideals by which he honorably served."

The NCSHP wishes to thank our law enforcement partners both here in North Carolina and throughout the nation who stood alongside us and the Perry family to honor Master Trooper Steven J. Perry.

On March 11, 2026, State Highway Patrol members and law enforcement partners from across the state and nation joined with family members, friends and loved ones of Fallen Master Trooper Steven J. Perry for a Celebration of Life service held in his honor at The Shepherd's Church in Cary.

Master Trooper Perry lost his life while in the performance of his duties on March 1, 2026, in Durham County. The State Highway Patrol was deeply honored to extend full Patrol honors to Master Trooper Perry during his memorial service, and we thank him for seven years of exceptional service that he devoted to his community, the people of Durham County and to our entire state.

Please join us in continued prayer for the entire Perry family. We stand ready to support them during this difficult time of loss. Thank you, Master Trooper Steven J. Perry, for your honorable service.

NCSHP Investigates Fatal Hit & Run Crash in Pitt County

On Wednesday, Mar. 11, at approximately 7:53 p.m., the State Highway Patrol responded to a hit & run fatal collision on US13 at US264 Alternate near Moye Turnage Rd in Pitt County.

Investigators determined that a pickup truck struck a motorcycle, subsequently fatally injuring the motorcycle operator. The suspect vehicle fled the scene and was last seen traveling south on US13 toward Greene County.

The suspect vehicle is believed to be dark in color (unknown body type) with heavy damage to its passenger side.

Anyone with information is urged to contact NCSHP investigators in Pitt County at 252-752-6118.

Funeral Details and Processional Route for Fallen Trooper Steven J. Perry Announced

• Visitation will be at The Shepherd's Church Worship Center located at 6051 Tryon Road in Cary beginning at 9:00 am on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
• Funeral service to be held at 12:00 p.m. immediately following visitation in the Worship Center. Seating availability is on a first come basis except for reserved seating for family, friends, first responders and special invited guests.
• A private graveside memorial service will be held following the service. This service is reserved for the family, law enforcement, emergency responders, dignitaries and special invited guests.

For the public wishing to view the funeral procession following the 12 p.m. (approximately 90 minute) funeral ceremony, the following route is planned. The public is encouraged not to block traffic and view from a safe location:

• Turn left onto Tryon Rd. / Walnut St. from The Shepherd’s Church
• Turn left onto ramp for US-1 NB
• Take exit 1B for I-40 West toward RDU
• Use the right 2 lanes to take exit 279B for NC-147 N toward Durham/Downtown
• Merge left onto I-885
• Use the left 2 lanes to turn slightly left onto NC-147 N
• Take exit 2 for NC-55/Alston Ave
• Turn left onto NC-55 E/S Alston Ave
• Turn right onto E. Lawson St.
• Turn left onto Fayetteville St
• Turn right into Beechwood Cemetery Durham, NC

Media affiliates wishing to attend the funeral ceremony are encouraged to follow the below points:

• Arrive no later than 11:00 a.m. to The Shepherd's Church through the Holly Spings Road entrance.
• Media will be directed to a reserved staging area adjacent to the church by assisting personnel upon arrival.
• Media are welcome to observe the service from the general public seating, but will not be permitted to set up cameras or equipment inside the church.
• Immediately preceding and following the funeral there will be no vehicle movement in, out or around the church due to movement of Trooper Perry’s body by the Caisson Unit.

Tributes Continue for Fallen Master Trooper Steven J. Perry

On Mar. 7, Cars and Coffee Morrisville, Inc hosted their monthly Cars & Coffee event in Durham. This month, organizers honored Fallen Master Trooper Steven J. Perry, the Perry Family and the entire State Highway Patrol.

Several partner agencies including the Durham County Sheriff's Office, Durham Police Department, NCCU Police Department, Morrisville Police Department and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) along with Colonel Freddy L. Johnson Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol, and NCSHP leadership members from Troop C were present to thank attendees at the event.

"The outpouring of support for the Perry family has been tremendously heartwarming," said Johnson. "Master Trooper Steven Perry was not only an ambassador for our state when he patrolled our roadways, he was also a fixture in his community. Trooper Perry's service transcended the uniform, and what we have experienced today is a testament to the impact he had on the lives of others."

A Celebration of Life Service is planned for Master Trooper Steven J. Perry on Mar. 11. The State Highway Patrol will provide further details of the service in the coming days.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol sends our condolences and prayers to the family of Deputy Kaleb Mitchell and the entire Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office family who had the honor of working beside him.

Our heartfelt sympathies are with you during this time of immense loss.

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of one of our own, Deputy Kaleb Mitchell, a Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office deputy. Transitioned while serving and protecting this morning, March 7th, 2026, in a motor vehicle accident. We ask for prayers from the community for his family, as well as The FCSO family. As more information becomes available, we will share it at such time.

Later today, we will have a memorial in front of the Sheriff's Office, located at 301 N. Church St. The community is welcome and encouraged to pay their respects.

NCSHP Extends Gratitude for Assistance Provided by Partners and Supporters in Robeson County

On Mar. 4, Fallen Master Trooper Stien Davis Jr. was led to his final resting place after a Celebration of Life Service held at Robeson Community College in Robeson County. The State Highway Patrol extends our sincere thanks and appreciation to the many organizations, community members and partners who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that the NCSHP and NCTA Caisson Unit could honor the life and legacy of Trooper Davis alongside his family, friends and loved ones.

Thank you to Robeson Community College for providing the venue as well as modifying their class schedule to accommodate the service. Thank you to Chick-fil-A in Lumberton for donating food and refreshments throughout the visitation. Additionally, we thank Wake and District for their exceptional service and partnership.

“The amount of support that the North Carolina State Highway Patrol received throughout the Celebration of Life services for Master Trooper Stien Davis Jr. was nothing short of astonishing,” said Colonel Freddy Johnson Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol. “I wish to personally thank all of the community members, emergency service workers, law enforcement agencies, Robeson Community College administrators and everyone who has expressed concern, well-wishes and heartfelt encouragement for the Davis family and our Patrol members who worked alongside Trooper Davis as they navigate through this difficult time.”

The entire NCSHP family is extremely grateful for the tremendous turnout of law enforcement agencies from across our state and nation. State Police and State Highway Patrol agencies from nearly half of the nation sent representation to the services for Master Trooper Stien Davis Jr.

On March 4, 2026, State Highway Patrol members, emergency responders and law enforcement partners from across the state and nation joined with family members and loved ones of Fallen Master Trooper Stien Davis Jr. for a Celebration of Life service held in his honor.

Master Trooper Davis lost his life while in the performance of his duties on February 22, 2026, in Robeson County. It was our sincere honor to extend full Patrol honors for Master Trooper Davis during his memorial service, and we thank him for nearly 10 years of exceptional service that he devoted to his community and to our state.
