Division of Air Quality has issued final air quality permits for Amazon Data Services and Duke Energy Progress in Richmond County.

The permits include emissions limits, required pollution controls and additional monitoring, testing, recordkeeping and reporting requirements based on public feedback.

DAQ’s review found that both projects can meet applicable federal air quality standards, and toxic air pollutant emissions are not expected to exceed health-based levels.

La División de Calidad del Aire (DAQ por sus siglas en ingles) ha emitido permisos finales de calidad del aire para Amazon Data Services y Duke Energy Progress en el condado de Richmond.

Los permisos incluyen límites de emisiones, controles de contaminación requeridos y requisitos adicionales de monitoreo, pruebas, registro y reportes basados en los comentarios del público.

La revisión de DAQ encontró que ambos proyectos pueden cumplir con los estándares federales de calidad del aire aplicables, y no se espera que las emisiones de contaminantes tóxicos superen los niveles basados en la salud.

In Black Mountain, is rebuilding the curbside recycling system damaged by Hurricane Helene.

Floodwater reached the cupholders in the town’s sanitation trucks and left five vehicles a total loss. Staff found rental trucks and had routes running again within a month.

A $525,000 DEQ Helene Recovery Recycling Infrastructure Grant will replace recycling equipment, allowing for more material to be collected, and make the town’s curbside service more resilient to future disasters.

Across the Pigeon River watershed in Haywood County, is restoring both the watershed and the livelihoods built around it.

After Hurricane Helene, a $2M grant from DEQ allowed Haywood Waterways to hire a paid cleanup crew to remove storm debris. Since then, their crew has removed more than 240,000 pounds of trash from local waterways.

Now, families are returning to the water, and Haywood Waterways is making the river cleaner and more resilient for the future.

📍 The DEQ Raleigh Regional Office has moved!

The Raleigh Regional Office is now located at 4407 Reedy Creek Road in Raleigh, where all in-person appointments will be held.

The move is part of DEQ’s Reedy Creek campus expansion, which provides additional space for staff, public meetings and laboratory operations. The new facility also features energy-efficient and sustainable elements, including solar panels that are expected to provide 33% of the building’s electricity needs. 🌱☀️

The NCDEQ Dam Safety Program is participating in the ASDSO Dam Safety 2026 National Conference this week at the Raleigh Convention Center.

Through Sept. 3, our team will connect with dam safety and levee professionals from across the country to share knowledge, exchange ideas and learn about innovative approaches and tools that can strengthen dam safety programs and help protect downstream communities.

NCDEQ staff will also share our experience using mobile GIS technology and geospatial analytics to support dam safety inspections and assess downstream hazards.
