Happy Emancipation Day.

On this day in history, President Abraham Lincoln signed the D.C. Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862, abolishing slavery in Washington, D.C. A historic step toward freedom, this moment marked the beginning of the end of slavery in the United States.

To honor this day, USCRI is sharing a selection of books that inform, empower, and inspire the continued fight toward a better tomorrow.

3 years of war in Sudan. 14 million displaced.

Behind every number is a real person, a parent separated from their child, a teacher with no classroom, a friend facing the future alone. Sudan's war has created the world's largest displacement crisis, and the world has largely looked away.

These are not statistics. They are people. And they deserve more than silence.

A reported memo would allow DHS to arrest and detain lawfully admitted refugees who haven't yet secured green cards within a year of arrival. These refugees were thoroughly vetted by the U.S. government before arrival. With support from USCRI once they reached the United States, many are now rebuilding their lives across American communities.

Tens of thousands could be affected. This follows earlier re-vetting measures that have already created serious instability for refugee families.

Policies like this create fear, unnecessary detention, and prolonged uncertainty for the communities we serve, and they erode America’s tradition of welcoming those fleeing persecution, violence, and war.
