FYI- If your having a new hood suppression system installed. Make sure your installer is not adding flow points to your system that are not needed that would require adding a tank or larger size tank that will cost more money. Specifically I have seen the large companies putting 3 flow point nozzles over fryers that only require 2 flow points.

Kidde recalled 37.8 million fire extinguishers that may not work because of a faulty handle, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.

FYI: USE OF GLOBE LINKS ON SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS ARE PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE. Just as the systems manufacturers entire system must be proven to meet UL standards, component manufacturers parts must meet the applicable requirements of the UL Standards as required by the fire codes and NFPA Standards. UL does this through their "Classified" listing. Here is an excerpt from a letter sent from UL to the manufacturers which shows the role of the UL Classified parts: THE USE OF ANY PARTS OR AGENT NOT SPECIFICALLY IDENTIFIED IN THE MANUFACTURER'S MANUAL OR USE OF PARTS NOT SPECIFICALLY UL CLASSIFIED FOR THE INTENDED USE IN THE SERVICING OF THE SYSTEM UNIT, DOES NOT MAINTAIN THE UL LISTING FOR THAT EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM UNIT, AND THEREFORE, WOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED UL LISTED. ALL GLOBE LINKS ARE UL LISTED. THESE INCLUDE ALL "ML" AND ALL "K" LINKS

FYI: Hood cleanings are not required at specific intervals. NC fire code states under section 609.3.3.1 that INSPECTIONS must be conducted at specific intervals depending on the type of cooking operations. 609.3.3.2 then states: If during the inspection it is found that hoods, grease removal devices, fans, ducts or other appurtenuances have an accumulation of grease, such components shall be cleaned. NFPA 11.4 Inspection for grease buildup has the same schedule for INSPECTIONS not cleaning. 11.6.1 then goes on to say that ONLY contaminated portions of the exhaust system shall be cleaned.

Another letter I found dated May 12,2011 from Ansul. Cheesemelters are an appliance that UL does not have a specific test method for. Due to UL not having a test method, protection of cheesemelters is only recommended coverage and is not UL listed.

FYI #2- Protection for appliances that have not been UL tested with the ANSUL restaurant fire suppression systems do not appear in their UL 300 listed manuals. Typical non-grease producing appliances, such as enclosed ovens, steam operated equipment, and soup kettles are generally NOT required to be protected unless mandated by the AHJ. If protection for these appliances are required by the AHJ, you may need to ask for protection guidelines from the AHJ. Keep in mind however, that protection of this type of equipment is NOT LISTED IN THE ANSUL R102 OR THE PIRANHA, INSTALLATION, DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL and WILL NOT BE UL APPROVED FOR THAT SPECIFIC APPLIANCE.

12/05/2016

This is a FYI to restaurant owners. Appliance protection other than what is listed in design manuals will sometimes be required by an AHJ. in the case of a cheesemelter you can follow Salamander Broiler protection. This is RECOMMENDED protection only. NOT UL listed or mandated by ANSUL or PYRO CHEM to protect. This is a non-grease producing appliance and not included in UL's battery of tests. ANSUL will provide a recommended protection, not recommend to protect appliances.

Notice to all businesses in Raleigh the Raleigh fire Marshall's office has adapted a new fire ordinance number 2015–492 section 5–2047 third party inspection and reporting system. This requires all inspection companies to submit inspection reports to a company called Brycer. Which will store the reports so the fire Marshall's can login and look at all locations. Any deficiencies that are on those reports will now have to be repaired in a certain time frame. Reports that have deficiencies on them Brycer will send an alert to the fire marshal so a letter can be sent out on Raleigh fire department letterhead. If you have any questions on this please call me
