Today we hosted our second Supportive Services Subcommittee meeting of the year at Promise Resource Network Raleigh Hub and Café.

PRN provides no barrier peer support services and respite housing for individuals navigating reentry, recovery, behavioral health challenges, and more. During today’s meeting, partners had the opportunity to tour the space, learn more about their services, and hear firsthand about the compassionate and creative ways PRN is meeting people where they are.

One of the most impactful moments came when we spoke with a guest who shared, “I love it here. It’s so peaceful.” And honestly, we agreed.

At the end of the tour, partners went around the room and shared one thing they would commit to bringing to PRN in support of the program and its guests. Commitments included free STI and diabetes screenings, life skills workshops, and offers to serve as referral sources for individuals needing additional support. It was a powerful example of collaboration in action and a reminder that meaningful community impact happens through partnership.

Thank you Elliot Brooks for welcoming us and for the incredible work you continue to do. Also, thank you to all of our partners who attended and offered support to help strengthen services for the community. Last but definitely not least, thank you to our subcommittee chair Simone E. Gardner for your continued leadership. 🙏🏾

At Wake LRC, we believe every success story deserves to be heard. Today we are honored to share this testimony from one of our participants, Ari Everett. 🙏🏾

“My name is Ari Everett. I’m 32 years old, born in Fayetteville, raised in Pennsylvania, and I moved to Raleigh in 2007. I’ve been in and out of state and federal prison since the age of 16.

In 2017, I was sentenced to 32 years in federal prison for a string of robberies. In 2022, I won my direct appeal and got over 20 years back. I was released on March 18, 2026 to the federal halfway house, CoreCivic.

After my release, I was introduced to Wake LRC and NC Works. I filled out job applications, attended classes, received clothes for interviews, hygiene packs, and motivational words from the kind staff at Wake LRC and NCWorks Career Center - Capital Area.

Last week, I got hired through Accurate Staffing at Mars, formerly known as Kellogg’s, making $16 an hour working warehouse and production. After 90 days, I’ll have the opportunity to be hired permanently by Mars where the pay increases to $20+ an hour.

I’d love to thank all the folks at Wake LRC and NC Works. From the kind staff sitting at the front desk when you walk in, to the staff who worked with me directly, and even the staff I only met in passing. Everyone was kind to me and helped me in some way.

Thank you. This is my testimony. God bless.”

Stories like Ari’s remind us why this work matters. Employment, encouragement, resources, and community support can make a real difference in someone’s reentry journey. We are proud of you, Ari, and excited for what’s ahead. 💙

Last Friday’s Wake Reentry Resource Exchange was nothing short of amazing.

With 40 community organizations and over 200 attendees, we gathered in one space for one purpose… to share information, resources, and most importantly, to connect. This event was a true reflection of what it looks like when the reentry community comes together, and we did just that.

We know it’s been a week since the event, but we took some time to reflect on what was achieved. The connections made, the collaboration between partners, and the shared commitment to supporting those returning from incarceration… it was powerful.

Our panel discussion, Invisible Barriers, moderated by Kerwin Pittman, of RREPS left a lasting impact. The conversation went beyond surface level and created space for real, honest dialogue about the traumatic effects of incarceration. Our panelists not only shared their personal experiences, but also spoke to the impact on their families and relationships.

A heartfelt thank you to Edward Scott, April Scales, Dr. Craig Waleed, and Kimberly Stone for your willingness to share both your lived experience and your expertise. And special thanks to Kerwin Pittman for asking the tough questions and creating a safe space for such meaningful conversation.

We also extend our appreciation to Anna Stein, First Lady of North Carolina for attending and for her willingness to learn, engage, and connect with our community.

This is truly one for the books.

Take a look at the photos below, beautifully captured by Sarah Stephens of SDot Photography. We truly appreciate everyone who contributed to making this event a success.

We’re still reflecting… and we are incredibly grateful.

We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Tyrone Vandyke. Tyrone came to us seeking a scholarship to obtain his CDL license. He had plans to drive over the road and eventually start his own company.

Tyrone was always a pleasure to be around. He had an infectious laugh and a positive energy that lit up the room. Even when challenges arose, he reached out for support and was consistent in doing what he could to accomplish his goals.

Tyrone became a regular at the center. Always stopping by to share updates on his progress and learn about any other opportunities that were available. The last time he came to see us, he shared his excitement about his new job and his plans to start his own company. We are deeply saddened that he is no longer with us. He will truly be missed. 😢😔

Thank you to everyone that viewed and shared the video we took of him after obtaining his CDL permit. His excitement that day was undeniable, and we were honored to celebrate that moment with him.

Please take a moment to enjoy this photo of him, taken at the NCWorks Career Center - Capital Area right before a job interview with the North Carolina Department of Transportation

Last year, he experienced the learning, the connection, and the purpose behind this work… and he’s coming back again this year 🙌🏽

Because this isn’t just an event. It’s a reminder that people matter and community matters.
