Happy Birthday to space pioneer Neil Armstrong!

Today, as we celebrate cosmic history, we’re gearing up for a special homecoming right here in Raleigh. Three-time NC State University alum and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronaut Christina Koch is returning to campus on August 24 and 25.

Did you know space travel is full of chemistry? And we love showing how chemistry powers these giant leaps.

Rocket engines rely on liquid hydrogen and oxygen reacting together to create propulsion. Deep space suits use advanced synthetic polymers to protect astronauts from extreme temperatures, and lithium hydroxide filters scrub exhaled carbon dioxide so astronauts can breathe safely.

Join us on campus as we welcome Christina Koch home for a celebration that is out of this world!

Carrying 10 boxes up three flights of stairs in the Raleigh heat? Let’s level up your hydration game! ☀️📦

When you break a sweat while moving, you're not just losing water—you're also shedding vital electrolytes like sodium and potassium. These essential elements are key for keeping your muscles strong and preventing cramps while you navigate those heavy items, like your minifridge!

Just plain water might not be enough. So, grab an electrolyte drink alongside your water to keep your muscle chemistry balanced! 🧪⚡

Welcome home, Wolfpack! Stay energized and hydrated out there!

Postdoctoral Position in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biological Sciences:

Professor Yi Xiao of the NC State Department of Chemistry invites applications to fill full-time postdoctoral fellow positions. Employment period can be 2–4 years, depending on performance. The Xiao lab conducts research on the isolation and characterization of nucleic acid-based recognition elements, known as aptamers and their applications in biosensors and as therapeutic agents. These efforts span multiple fields, including bioanalytical chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, biological science, and bioinformatics.

Current projects in the Xiao lab include the isolation of aptamers for small molecule and protein targets; development of new in vitro aptamer selection methodologies; the advancement of optical and electrochemical biosensors; aptamer characterization by gold-standard biophysical methods (enzyme fluorescence assay, MST, ITC, BLI; CD spectroscopy; development of portable devices for on-site or point-of-care sensing; and the synthesis of nanomaterial and organic probes for optical biosensing.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the aptamer field and SELEX. The ideal candidate will have experience with gel electrophoresis, PCR, DNA purification, biophysical characterization methods, bacteria and/or mammalian cell culture, protein expression and purification.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field. Successful candidates will be expected to work independently and demonstrate strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Salary will depend on experience, publications, track record, and skill and can be highly competitive.

All correspondence should be sent to [email protected] with a title of “postdoc position”.
