We are excited to share that the replacement for Tanker 198 is in production at PierceMfg . We are expecting to perform final inspection sometime in late September to early October. The new Tanker 198 is a Freightliner M2-106 and will feature a 1000 gallon per minute pump and 2000 gallon tank. This is one of five tankers currently in production for Wake County and represents a significant investment in rural fire protection. We are excited to share weekly updates as the build progresses.

Building relationships with our partner agencies is paramount to successful outcomes when it matters. Doing the hard work before the need is real and the impacts are extreme. Thankful to have such a great group of public safety partners in Wake County. The lessons learned and the key takeaways from this exercise will serve the community in ways they may never understand.

As the school year begins, we work closely with partners across Raleigh dedicated to city-wide safety and emergency preparedness. 🔥 ON THIS DAY IN NORTH CAROLINA HISTORY — AUGUST 13, 1889

Imagine downtown Raleigh filled with firefighters, horse-drawn equipment, marching bands and spectators lining Fayetteville Street.

That's exactly what was happening 137 years ago today.

Firefighters from across North Carolina gathered in Raleigh for the first annual convention of the North Carolina State Firemen's Association, the second time in the association's young history that firemen from every corner of the state had come together, following its founding in Greensboro the year before.

The festivities began with a firemen's parade up Fayetteville Street, but this wasn't simply a celebration.

These early firefighters were discussing some surprisingly modern questions:

🔥 How could buildings be inspected to prevent fires?
⚡ What dangers did the new electrical wires pose?
🚒 What equipment worked best?
💦 How could firefighters protect property from unnecessary water damage?

They also competed against one another in contests that turned the gathering into quite an event for the city.

It was an early chapter in the organization of North Carolina's fire service, and a glimpse of Raleigh in an era when firefighting looked very different from what we know today.

Could you imagine standing on Fayetteville Street watching this parade in 1889?

📖 SUBSCRIBERS: Today's expanded On This Day in North Carolina goes deeper on this convention, then jumps forward 31 years to another moment on the very same street, the day North Carolina's own governor stood before the legislature and begged them to ratify the 19th Amendment. They said no anyway.

We were excited to share some time with our partners at Northern Wake Fire Department to map out some of their hazardous areas on Falls Lake where they have a high incident count. The lower water levels give us a glimpse at what is underneath the water and allows for better aerial imagery. It was also a great time to see their new underwater ROV in action.

Congratulations to Chief Johnston on his retirement from the Fuquay-Varina Fire Department! Chief Johnston was a long-time member of Western Wake and served as Fire Chief from 2013-2020. What an outstanding career!
