LGBT Center of Raleigh Library

LGBT Center of Raleigh Library Serving the Triangle and beyond! The LGBT Center of Raleigh Library opened October 2011, and is the largest LGBTQ community library in North Carolina!

Home to over 2,500 books, the library contains almost every genre imaginable: from fiction to nonfiction, reference encyclopedias to graphic novels, western romances to poetry anthologies, the library has the LGBTQ-specific resources for you! With new books arriving monthly, the library is always changing and adapting to the needs of the Triangle’s LGBTQ community. A one-time library card fee ($5

for individuals; $10 for households) provides you with a snazzy library card to use while you search our online collection at the on-site resource station. Library volunteers will be glad to assist you in the checkout process and get you on the road to literary leisure time. A second-phase expansion in late 2011 included the addition of a CD/DVD collection, as well as a special reference collection in honor of one of our most generous supporters. We welcome new library volunteers, and any suggestions or donations. All donations benefit the LGBT Center of Raleigh and serve to better equip the Triangle’s LGBTQ community and our allies! Stop in and check out the Center's library today!

The LGBT Center of Raleigh announces "Pages of Pride”, a family friendly literary festival celebrating all things q***r literature!

The festival will be held 11am-3pm on Sunday May 22 at Apex Community Park's large shelter, 2200 Laura Duncan Road, Apex.

In the face of news about LGBTQ+ centred books being challenged and censored, the Center is providing the Triangle community an opportunity to engage with books, honor the stories of LGBTQ+ people, and celebrate.

Join the LGBT Center of Raleigh and partners for a Q&A with Sally Rubin filmmaker of Mama has a Mustache, a short, quirky, fully animated documentary about gender and family, as seen through children’s eyes. Driven completely by audio interviews of kids ages 5-10, the film uses these sound bites combined with clipart and mixed media to explore how children experience a world outside of the traditional gender binary.

Live Q&A is Thursday, March 3 at 8pm ET. The film will be screened at the beginning of the event and you can also access the film anytime between Mar. 1 and Mar. 9. This event is open to the public; youth, parents, other adults, and supporters are welcome.

This is a beautiful article from 2020 on the history of LGBT Indigenous people of different tribes, and how they were viewed: (several tribes see them as holy-spiritual): https://www.smithsonianmag.com/blogs/national-museum-american-indian/2020/06/17/pride-2020/

And to conclude, a bit of info on what it means to be Two-Spirit: https://indiancountrytoday.com/archive/8-things-you-should-know-about-two-spirit-people-294cNoIj-EGwJFOWEnbbZw.

The LGBT Center Library stands on Tuscarora land. Celebrate those who came before you. Happy Indigenous People's Day!

Two Spirit has been present for countless generations that predate LGBTQ terminology.

Such a fun, fascinating event with V.E. Schwab and Naomi Novik tonight! Thank so much to Quail Ridge Books for organizing and hosting - we were so glad to be part of it!

As a follow-up, I want to share again this essay about the long, painful, liberating process of coming out:

"You didn’t need walls—you needed space. Out here, there are no rooms, no roof. There are no walls, no doors, just open ground, a sprawling night filled with radiant riotous blooms....There are people out here in the garden, and they welcome you without asking where you’ve been, and you say you’re sorry you’re late, you got lost, and they fold you into their arms and says it is okay, you are here now."

For the writer, it was more like coming out of a house.
