Image Description:

A square informational graphic from the North Carolina Statewide Independent Living Council (NCSILC). The background is textured blue with a large white geometric panel centered on the page, outlined in black.

At the top of the white panel, dark blue text reads: “STATE PLAN FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING SURVEY.”

Centered below, in larger bold blue text, is the message: “Your Feedback Is Important!”

Additional blue text states: “Your input will help identify gaps and guide advocacy efforts to strengthen services and supports for people with disabilities across North Carolina.”

At the bottom of the graphic is the blue NCSILC logo, featuring a stylized figure in motion alongside the text: “NCSILC – NC Statewide Independent Living Council.”

The design uses a clean, professional layout with high-contrast blue and white colors, emphasizing the importance of community input from people with disabilities and other stakeholders to help shape independent living services and advocacy priorities across North Carolina.

ICYMI: Carolina Journal posted an op-ed written by our CEO, Lisa Poteat, on innovative and cost saving solutions for NC Medicaid. We've been talking with legislators and leaders at NC DHHS about these solutions and we look forward to continued conversations.

We recognize the need for creative investments that will help sustain supports and services for individuals with IDD, promoting independence and decreasing dependency on paid supports, and saving Medicaid dollars to be used in other ways.

We had such a great time at the Charlotte Airport last Saturday. An incredible group of airport employees and volunteers put on this airport rehearsal experience for fifty local families- families for whom air travel is a significant challenge due to sensory issues, autism spectrum disorder, high anxiety, or any number of reasons relating to a disability.

We had such a great time at the Charlotte Airport ✈ last Saturday. An incredible group of airport employees 👨‍✈️👩‍✈️ and volunteers put on this airport rehearsal experience for fifty local families- families for whom air travel is a significant challenge due to sensory issues, autism spectrum disorder, high anxiety, or any number of reasons relating to a disability. They got to practice the check-in process 🎫, with or without luggage 🛅, go through TSA, walk a long distance to their gate 🚶🏿👩‍🦼, do a lot of waiting, board the plane according to their zone, listen to flight attendant instructions, and even taxi on the runway before deplaning. It was a tremendous experience for all involved, and we cannot thank everyone enough for their participation. 👋🏼 See you next year!

What an incredible week!! Our CEO, Lisa Poteat, attended the IDD Legislative Caucus. It was an amazing day filled with stories from individuals, family members, and caregivers. They had the opportunity to speak directly to the Legislative Caucus, telling them about successes and challenges they face every day.

And on Thursday, Governor Josh Stein signed a bill allocating $319 million for Medicaid. We cannot thank the IDD community enough for their time making phone calls and sending emails to NC representatives, senators, and state leaders asking for Medicaid to be funded. Enjoy this victory and know there is still work to be done.
