They’ve built a life around second chances. In Rachel Conway and Trevor Ketterling’s home, every foster leaves a paw print in a special book, proof they were here, loved and mattered. For those who didn’t survive, a small heart rests beside their name.

By day, Rachel serves as assistant athletics director for mental health and performance psychology at NC State University Athletics, helping student-athletes build resilience. By night, she and her husband, Trevor, an actor, former vet assistant and full-time pet dad, run one of Raleigh’s most loving revolving doors.

The Midwest natives met in college and have lived in all four contiguous U.S. time zones. They moved to Raleigh in March 2024 with seven permanent pets, one snake, two dogs and four cats, and a commitment to fostering.

“I was always meant to be an animal mom,” Rachel says. “I want to save them all.”

Before Raleigh, they fostered in Winston-Salem while Rachel worked at Wake Forest University, partnering with the Forsyth Humane Society. After moving, she applied to foster with the Wake County Animal Center.

Then came a knock at the door.

A neighbor had found a stray dog. Rachel and Trevor helped catch him and brought him to the Animal Center. Reading the surrender paperwork was hard, especially the note that he could be euthanized. Rachel told staff they had applied to foster and would take him if allowed.

That dog was Paddington.

After completing training, they brought him home. He was later adopted by an NC State student, renamed Chief and is now learning tricks and soaking up attention.

And just like that, their Raleigh home became a revolving door.
Over four years, two in Forsyth County and two in Wake County, they’ve taken in medical and behavioral cases, rabbits and multiple litters at once. Trevor handles complex care. Rachel helps fearful animals build trust.

Their first foster, Gadget, a bold little chihuahua, was hard to let go.
“We’re not the forever,” Rachel says. “We’re the steppingstone to forever.”

Fostering means vet visits, early mornings and tough goodbyes. Their home would be quieter without it. Still, they rarely go more than two weeks without welcoming another animal.

“Animals are resilient and unconditional,” Rachel says. “They just love you.”

For as long as they can, Rachel and Trevor plan to keep saying yes, because somewhere in Raleigh, another animal is waiting for a second chance.

Wise, loyal and full of heart, Curtis (267195) could have stepped right out of “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein as Enzo, the unforgettable narrator and devoted companion who reminds readers that life is not about racing to the finish line but about love, loyalty and staying beside the people who matter most.

Like Enzo, Curtis is an old soul. Calm and thoughtful, he is the happiest when he is with his people, whether that means a peaceful walk through the park, a beach stroll or relaxing at home after the day’s adventures. He already knows the routines of home life, walks nicely on a leash, is potty trained and settles in with the quiet confidence of a dog who understands companionship.

In the novel, Enzo watches over his family with patience, wisdom and unwavering devotion, observing the human world with insight and heart. Curtis carries that same steady spirit, the kind of loyal friend who stays present through every chapter, offering comfort, consistency and quiet strength.

If Curtis sounds like the perfect companion for your next chapter, email our volunteer matchmakers at [email protected] with the subject line “Curtis, 267195.”

This feature is part of “BOOKed for Adoption,” a partnership campaign between Wake County Animal Center and Wake County Public Libraries. Visit your local library to discover the book, enjoy this beautiful story and then visit the shelter to meet your own Enzo-inspired companion.

Meet Beffy (267712), an easygoing walker who breezes past other dogs without a fuss. This goofy, affectionate sidekick will win you over fast-you won't know what hit you when his excitement kicks in! Beffy wants to be part of everything and meet everyone he can. Full of enthusiasm and love, he'll thrive in a home that offers plenty of mental enrichment and engagement to keep his busy mind happy and satisfied every day.

In playgroups, Beffy was an absolute hoot, staying low to the ground with his tail tucked while running funny little circles around his playmate. He played wonderfully with his female companion and showed himself to be friendly, silly, and full of fun.

Beffy is neutered and ready to go home today! He is also up to date on vaccinations, flea/tick and heartworm prevention, and is microchipped. If you have cats, we recommend slow introductions over time. If you have children in your home, we recommend supervision between animals and children at all times.
If you're interested in learning more about him, please reach out to our volunteer matchmakers at [email protected] with the subject line "Beffy, 267712".

This pet is at the adoption center and can be visited any day from noon to 6 PM. Adoptions are first-come, first-served; you must meet with a pet in-person before the adoption process can be started.

Today, on National Rescue Dog Day, we celebrate the incredible dogs who have found loving homes and the people who make those second chances possible. At the Wake County Animal Center, every adoption, foster placement, volunteer hour, rescue partner and act of support helps pets find brighter futures. Whether you adopted a dog, opened your home temporarily, donated supplies or simply shared their stories, you are part of the rescue journey. Together, our community is making a difference, one wagging tail at a time.

Crusty Crab (265382) got his name honestly - his skin could use a little TLC right now - but don't let that fool you. This boy may be a little rough around the edges on the outside, but it doesn't slow him down one bit. With the right care, he has real potential to feel and look much better. After likely spending much of his 7 years without a great diet, he'd benefit from some simple upgrades like fish oil supplements and a salmon-based kibble instead of chicken.

True to his "Crab" name, he's got plenty of energy and loves to scuttle around the yard. In playgroup, he happily ran around with a female partner and clearly enjoyed the outing. When he realized she was a girl, he had a brief moment of misplaced enthusiasm, but he took her correction well and adjusted appropriately - showing that he can read cues and respond nicely.

Crusty Crab is young at heart, engages well with people, and listens nicely. He already knows how to sit and is very treat motivated, making him a great candidate for continued training. He was easy to collar and walk, though he can be jumpy at first in excitement.

Inside the building, Crusty Crab can be reactive due to all the noise and commotion, but this likely ties back to limited exercise and stimulation. With regular outlets for his energy, this jumpiness should calm down, letting his better qualities shine through.

Although he is heartworm positive, it is treatable and not contagious. Friends of Wake County Animal Center has provided a $600 sponsorship to help cover the cost of treatment. Email [email protected] for more information.

If you're interested in learning more about him, please reach out to our volunteer matchmakers at [email protected] with the subject line "Crusty Crab 265382".
