Today, we’re launching a new series called Into the Archives. We’ll take a look at some Haywood (and Haywood adjacent) papers in archives around North Carolina.

Today, we’re looking at a 1820-1821 housekeeping memoranda book written in by Eliza Haywood when she was mistress of Haywood Hall. Note that she bought “red lead for hearth paint”!

Haywood Hall has had many owners since it was first built in 1799, but all of them have been members of the Haywood family until the house was given to the Colonial Dames of America in the State of North Carolina in 1977.
