Kyran Anderson Academy is designed to enhance a student's enthusiasm for science and mathematics. The program is free and takes place for one week in the summer. The program serves students in Wake and neighboring counties with special emphasis on students from groups under represented in scientific and mathematical careers. Examples are African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and students from low income homes.

Mission: - To encourage students to continue studying science and math - To encourage students in the early stages of development that science and math can be accessible and fun - To inform students about contributions of underrepresented groups to Science and Math - To build confidence and self-esteem - To teach team building skills - To enlist parental support for further involvement in math and science - To open opportunities for students to pursue careers in science and mathematics

Join us, SUNDAY, JUNE 9, on The Alvin Galloway Show (TAGS) on radiophoenix.org, Every Sunday, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. My guests for the SECOND-HALF of the FIRST HOUR, 2:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., in TAGS' BLACK TO SCHOOL/BLACK IN EDUCATION segment are STEM advocates, Dr. Pamela Gilchrist, Rev. Barrington B. Ross and Sarah Smith.

The interview was conducted while the science teachers were in Arizona for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF).
Join us as we discuss the Intel ISEF, STEM, motivating Black students for STEM and STEAM careers and more.

Dr. Pamela O. Gilchrist is director of Imhotep and Kyran Anderson Academies for The Science House, North Carolina State University (NCSU). In this position, she manages informal STEM programs for K-12 students and mentors educators. She is a member of the Academy of Outstanding Faculty Engaged in Extension at NCSU, a program that annually honors excellence in extension, engagement, and economic development.
Dr. Gilchrist is an Emeritus Principal Investigator of the NSF. She developed the first hybrid physics and engineering program for students and teachers in NC. She was the first African American woman elected to lead the NC Science Leadership Association. Also, she was featured in, Photonics Spectra, an international industry publication for her innovative work employed to equip young learners for the global workforce.
Dr. Gilchrist received a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters of Education degree from East Carolina University. In 2014 she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Educational Research and Policy Analysis from North Carolina State University.
A native of St. Pauls, NC, Dr. Gilchristis the daughter of Harriett E. and the late Waymon E. Gilchrist.

Barrington Ross is a 32-year veteran science educator and pastor in North Carolina. He has directed the 3a Regional Science and Engineering Fair for 7 years. He once lived in Phoenix and worked at Motorola. He now resides in Durham, NC and teaches 6th grade at Brogden Middle School and Pastors Pearson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Yanceyville, N.C. He has worked with science fairs for 20 years and serves on several Science Fair boards in North Carolina.
He's a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University in
with a Bachelor's in Educational Biology and a Master of
Divinity Degree from Payne Theological Seminary.
He is married to Shawn Myers Ross. They have two children, Caleb and Amena; and one granddaughter, Eden.

Sarah Smith is a retired high school science teacher from the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System in Charlotte North Carolina. Her love for science didn’t end at retirement.
She currently works part-time in the Center for Stem Education at University of North Carolina – Charlotte, as a special project assistant.
The UNC Charlotte Regional 6 NC Science and Engineering Fair is on the competitions sponsored at the Center for Stem Education, with an average of over 400 students participating. The Center is affiliated with Intel ISEF, which allowed the Center to send two student projects to Intel ISEF for the competition. “I have enjoyed being one of the chaperons carrying students to the Intel ISEF the past 14 years. It is a great experience for the students allowing them to meet and compete with students from the many different countries, a great experience in diversity,” said Smith.

Parents and students of Kyran Anderson Academy, we thank you for joining us for a wonderful two sessions this summer! The dates for the Summer 2019 session have been posted and the theme is STEAM Powered MakerSpace. Please read below for directions on how to apply.

1.Register online:

3. Receive notification of acceptance or waitlist status by March 18.
4. Submit $100 nonrefundable payment by April 13.
5. Attend the Mandatory Parent and Student Orientation on Thursday, April 25, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. to secure final placement in the program.
