Dennis Efird recently received the Old North State Award from Governor Josh Stein, during a celebration of Efird's retirement as an integral member of the DWS Information Technology team. DWS Information Technology Director Michael Hoskins made the presentation at our Central Office in Raleigh. The Old North State Award is presented by the Governor to recognize “dedication and service beyond expectation and excellence to the Great State of North Carolina.” Efird's 22+ years of exemplary service to the State began as an Analyst for the Labor Market Information team of the Employment Security Commission. He's been with DWS since our division was first created, and more recently served as Application Manager.

In addition to the Old North State Award, Efird was presented an American Flag that was flown over the United States Capitol in honor of his retirement, at the request of Senator Thom Tillis.

Congratulations, Dennis, and thank you for your contributions to North Carolina!

Congratulations to Ashley! What an inspiring success story! This Dislocated Worker Grant helped hundreds of people impacted by layoffs in Canton and Waynesville to find new careers and training. Southwestern Commission

FROM PAPER MILL TO NURSING: Ashley’s Success Story

When the Canton Paper Mill closed its doors, Ashley Welch found herself facing an uncertain future after nearly 17 years of dedicated employment. Like many workers affected by the closure, she was forced to rethink her career path and what came next.

Instead of allowing the loss of her job to define her future, Ashley chose to see it as an opportunity for a new beginning.

With support from the NCWorks Career Center - Haywood County WIOA National Dislocated Worker Grant program and guidance from the NC Works Career Center staff, Ashley began working toward her dream of becoming a nurse.

She started by enrolling in CNA classes and continued her education at Haywood Community College, completing prerequisites before entering nursing school.

Over the next three years, Ashley demonstrated incredible determination, perseverance, and hard work. Throughout her educational journey, the WIOA National Dislocated Worker Grant helped cover tuition, travel expenses, and supplies needed for classes and clinicals—allowing her to focus on achieving her goals.

Today, Ashley is a proud graduate with an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing and is preparing to make a difference in the lives of others through her new career.

Ashley credits the NCWorks Career Center staff, especially the WIOA Case Manager Sharon Greico, and the grant program for helping make her success possible.

Her story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, resources, and determination, setbacks can become new opportunities.

Congratulations, Ashley! We are proud of your accomplishments and honored to have been part of your journey. 🎉💙
