⭐ May 20, 1775, commemorates the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, a bold local statement claiming freedom from British rule long before the national Declaration was signed.

⭐ April 12, 1776, marks the Halifax Resolves, when NC became the first colony to officially authorize its delegates to vote for independence.

As the nation prepares to celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary, these dates remind us that North Carolina has been shaping the story of American freedom from the very beginning. Some cognitive changes are a normal part of aging — but significant decline is not and may be a sign of Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Dementia affects memory and thinking enough to interfere with daily life, and it’s not a normal part of getting older.

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. Small, everyday habits can help lower your risk: stay mentally active, keep learning, move your body, protect your head, avoid smoking, manage blood pressure and diabetes, eat well, maintain a healthy weight, and prioritize sleep.

Breast cancer affects women of every background, and early detection can make a significant difference in outcomes. Some women, predominantly black women, experience higher diagnosis of aggressive forms of breast cancer and higher mortality rates, it is important for all women to prioritize breast health and regular screenings.

Most women ages 40–74 are advised to get screened every 2 years, and high risk women may need to start earlier. To help you take control of your health journey, we invite you to participate in the NIA Breast Cancer Campaign.

Nia is a free tool that guides you through questions about family history, genetics, and past screenings to help you understand your personal risk and what steps to take next.
