Among the principles of Dr. King’s legacy are: respect, equality, opportunity, diversity and a commitment to peace, justice, and non-violent solutions to conflict. All of these principles at the heart of the civil rights movement are equally as relevant to our lives today as we seek to address and solve present-day social issues in our community. We are a focused, collaborative movement that creat

es and facilitates experiences that will foster a Beloved Community by developing leaders in Dr. King’s passionate commitment for transformation and justice. Committee seeks to engage individuals and organizations in the work to achieve a more equitable and inclusive community by:

Educating for deeper understanding and awareness
Forming relationships of respect and equality
Building partnerships and collaboration that lead to transformation
Facilitating civil and thoughtful dialogue

For leaders with 3+ years of impact in social justice, equity, and inclusivity.
📌 Award: $7,500

✨ John Lewis Student Activist Award
For young leaders (ages 14–22) making strides in social justice activism.
📌 Award: $500

"The deadline has been extended to December 31st."

The Triangle Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee (TMLKC) is excited to announce our annual award honoring the life and legacy of the late U.S. Congressman and Civil Rights leader, John Lewis. TMLKC invites young leaders between the ages of 14-22 years old (high school or older) who are making a positive impact through social justice activism in the Triangle and surrounding areas (i.e. Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Orange, Vance and Wake counties) The John Lewis Award recipient will be announced at the annual Triangle Martin Luther King Annual Interfaith Prayer Breakfast on January 15, 2024, as part of the Committee’s celebration of the King Holiday.
