The North Carolina SBI, Magnolia Police Department, NC State Highway Patrol, and Hoke County sheriff’s office have located and arrested The suspect wanted for this weekend’s Magnolia homicide. Magnolia Police are working to get the suspect back to Duplin County now.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. It's a day to remember the hundreds of thousands of people who have died from overdoses. We also acknowledge that grief doesn't go away for the families and friends left behind, and that everyone is affected.

Overdose still carries a lot of stigma, and that stigma keeps people from asking for help or getting it. Today is a good day to learn what naloxone does, know the signs of an overdose, and talk about substance use as a health issue rather than a moral failing.

The North Carolina SBI works every day to fight the drug trade in this state. Our agents are in communities across NC, working to dismantle the networks that are supplying the drugs killing our friends and family. Every day in North Carolina, 8 people die from overdoses, and the SBI doesn't want another family to go through a death due to drugs.

The State of North Carolina Career Expo runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. TODAY at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Durham. Dozens of state employers will be on hand for job seekers.

Hiring agencies include the Department of Transportation, the Department of Adult Correction and the State Bureau of Investigation, plus representatives from UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State.

Attendees can talk one-on-one with recruiters about openings across state government, and several agencies will run prescheduled interviews and information sessions on site.

The NC State Bureau of Investigation, Magnolia Police Department, and Duplin County Sheriff's Office are asking for the public's help locating Gerardo Olvera, wanted in connection with a homicide Sunday evening.

Olvera should be considered armed and dangerous.

He was last seen around 8:16 p.m. near I-95 Northbound in Benson, driving a grey Ford Flex with North Carolina registration RHZ7826.

If you see Olvera or this vehicle, call 911 immediately and report the location. Do not approach.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) spent a week training agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) regarding the eradication of illegal drugs in our states.

Fifteen SBI agents led more than 60 hours of instruction for 20 SLED agents over the course of the training. These partnerships are invaluable, and they'll be a force multiplier throughout the Carolinas.

The SBI thanks SLED for its continued commitment to training across state lines.

(HARNETT COUNTY, N.C.) -- The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is assisting the Lillington Police Department with a homicide investigation following an overnight incident at Harnett Correctional Institution.

One man was killed. A second man has been charged in his death. The name of the deceased is not being released until next of kin has been notified.

Special Agents from the SBI's Capital District responded to the scene, where they gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses. The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is assisting in the investigation.

The investigation remains active. Additional charges are possible. No additional details are available at this time.

$100,000 can be yours for help solving an NC murder

Saturday, August 29. 2026 marks four years since Randy Miller was murdered in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina.

Randy was in his own driveway, preparing his boat for what should have been a great day of fishing, when a suspect walking down the road approached him and stabbed him in the heart. Four years later, his family, friends, and the entire community still deserve answers—and justice.

The Atlantic Beach Police Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation need the public’s help identifying and locating the person responsible. A $100,000 reward is available for information that leads to an arrest.

SBI Announces Another Successful S*xual Predator Sting Operation

(SWAIN COUNTY, N.C.) — The Swain County Sheriff's Office, working with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners, arrested four people during Operation Shepherd's Hammer, a child exploitation investigation conducted in early August.

Investigators from multiple agencies operated out of undisclosed locations in Swain County to identify adults seeking to engage in illegal s*xual activity with children.

The operation identified 14 subjects. Four are now in custody. The remaining 10 are expected to face charges in the coming weeks. These are the four in custody.

(ASHEVILLE, N.C.) — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is releasing the name of the man who died Thursday in an officer-involved shooting in Asheville.

Marcellus Tremaine Robinson, of Asheville, died in the incident.

The SBI's investigation is ongoing. No further details are available at this time.
Once complete, the investigation will be turned over to the district attorney's office for review.

Davie County Man Charged Following Joint Investigation into Child S*x Offenses

RALEIGH — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has charged a Davie County man in connection with the s*xual assault of a child.

The Davie County Sheriff's Office requested the SBI for investigative assistance after receiving a report in July that a minor child had been s*xually assaulted.

Investigators conducted multiple witness and forensic interviews during the investigation. As a result, the SBI charged Joshua Lee Phipps, 42, of Davie County, with:

-- 5 counts of felony statutory s*x offense with a child by an adult
-- 4 counts of felony indecent liberties with a child

Phipps was taken into custody without incident today. He was placed under a $750,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Davie County District Court.

The SBI thanks the Davie County Sheriff's Office and the Dragonfly House Children's Advocacy Center for their assistance with this investigation.
