Congrats to the Wise Wolves from Wakefield Middle School in north Raleigh, as seen with their 2018 Watershed Stewardship School (WSS) Award with Wake District educator Sheila Jones (far left) and Wake District Supervisor Jenna Wadsworth (far right.) Throughout the school year, the nine students with special needs and their teachers- Jessica Miller and Pat Adriance- teamed up with various community partners to achieve seven positive actions to learn about and improve their local Neuse River watershed. This award marks two firsts: the Wise Wolves are the first students with special needs to take on the Watershed Stewardship School challenge, and Wakefield Middle School is the first middle school in Wake County to earn this recognition from Wake Soil and Water Conservation District.

For more information about the WSS Program, contact Wake District at 919-250-1065 or [email protected].

Wake County was well represented at this summer’s 2018 Resource Conservation Workshop (RCW) at NCSU. Six deserving local high school students attended the conservation camp on full scholarships awarded by Wake Soil and Water Conservation District and the Friends of Wake SWCD. Students spent the week learning about natural resource management outdoors in the field, and inside university labs and classrooms.
