The Rancho Cordova Police Department is working to make the City of Rancho Cordova a safe place to live and work by forming partnerships with its citizens and businesses. To us, providing Police services is a lot more than just writing a crime report after a crime has occurred; it means working with the community to prevent crime and to solve community problems. I invite you to become our partners in making your neighborhood a better place to live as our community grows. Get involved by:

•Volunteering at a neighborhood school or youth organization
•Staying informed and getting involved in community issues that matter to you

Congratulations to Sgt. Jeff Wright on his 20-year law enforcement anniversary! 🙌 Twenty years in any career is a milestone, especially in law enforcement at a large California agency, and Sgt Wright has been steadfast in his commitment to his community through thick and thin!

Sgt Wright has spent many years in Rancho Cordova as a patrol officer, and now as a patrol sergeant. Sgt. Wright’s work ethic and commitment make him a perfect fit for RCPD and he is a valuable asset to the city and community! Well done, Sgt. Wright! 🫡

Recently, RCPD officers received a traffic-related complaint regarding an incident at a busy Rancho Cordova intersection regarding a vandalism that had just occurred to a passing vehicle.

Upon contacting the victim, he told officers he was stopped at a red light when a large, unidentified object suddenly struck his windshield, causing it to shatter. The victim had no idea where the object came from, and there were no witnesses to the incident. The damage to the vehicle was estimated at more than $1,000.

Officers began investigating and reviewed traffic-camera footage from the area. The footage provided RCPD with valuable information about the incident and allowed them to track the suspect as he traveled through the city. Officers were eventually able to identify the suspect, who had been contacted in the area on multiple prior occasions.

The suspect was later located at a nearby park where he was known to camp, and he was subsequently arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail for felony vandalism and a felony probation violation.

This is another example of great police work by RCPD, through the utilization of technology, investigative resources, and persistence to identify and locate the suspect. This investigation serves as another reminder of RCPD’s commitment to the community! 🙌

Oftentimes making a difference starts with something as simple and powerful as taking the time to listen. This summer, School Resource Officer Ball met a young female student who was facing some difficulties in her life.

During their conversation, Officer Ball learned something that immediately stood out - despite the circumstances she was facing, the young lady had a desire to play flag football and repeatedly showed up to practice, ready to work hard and give it her all, even when she was lacking the necessary equipment.
🌟
Seeing her determination, Officer Ball provided her with a pair of cleats, football socks, and receiving gloves so she could continue doing what she loves with confidence! Today, the young lady continues to show up, work hard, and give it everything she has, and we couldn’t be prouder of her strength and determination!

Sometimes, helping hands don’t require grand gestures. Instead, they may look like a caring conversation, a pair of cleats, and someone taking the time to say, “I believe in you.” This is what “commitment to community” looks like - showing up for our kids, listening when they need someone, and giving them the support they need to keep moving forward!

During Child Passenger Safety Week, RCPD encourages all parents and caregivers to make sure their children are riding safely by using the correct car seats, booster seats and properly fitted seat belts. This annual campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of car seat safety and proper installation.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly half of car seats (46%) are misused. Properly installed car seats have been shown to reduce fatal injury crashes by 71% for infants under a year old and by 54% for toddlers ages 1 through 4.

Current California law requires all children under 2 years old to ride in a rear-facing car seat, unless the child is 40 or more pounds or is 40 or more inches tall. Once a child reaches these milestones, all children under the age of 8 years old are still required to be secured in a car seat or booster seat, in the back seat. Children 8 and older, or who are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall, may be secured by a booster seat, but at a minimum must be secured by a safety belt.

As of January 1, 2027, AB 435 requires children ages 8 to 16 years old to pass all steps of the “Five-Step Test” before they can safely use a seat belt without a booster seat. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to keep children in the proper rear or forward-facing seat as long as possible and use the Five-Step Test as a guide, before it becomes law in 2027, to determine if their child is big enough to safely use a seat belt without a booster seat.

🚨 September is "Pedestrian Safety Month" in California. RCPD would like to remind drivers to slow down and be alert for people walking on our roads. By always taking extra precautions, you can help protect pedestrians and reduce the risk of crashes and injuries.

In California alone, 1,090 people were struck and killed while walking in 2024, which accounted for 28% of all traffic fatalities.

“Every step we take towards greater pedestrian safety is a step towards saving lives," says RCPD Sgt. Jeremy Day. "We want to remind everyone that safety begins with you, whether you're behind the wheel or on foot. Small actions, like slowing down, putting away distractions and yielding at crosswalks can make a life-saving difference.”

Pedestrians do not have the same protections as drivers and passengers. A difference of just 15 MPH significantly increases the likelihood that a person walking will be seriously injured if struck by a vehicle!

Here are some pedestrian safety tips from RCPD!
✅ Be predictable and use crosswalks.
✅ Watch for approaching vehicles and be cautious crossing the street. At 30 mph, a driver needs at least 90 feet to stop!
✅ Make it easier for drivers to see you at night! Consider wearing bright colors, reflective material, or use a flashlight when practical!
✅ Be careful crossing streets or entering crosswalks at night!

🇺🇸 ⚫️🔵⚫️ 🇺🇸On September 17, 2018, Officer Mark Stasyuk and Officer Julie Robertson responded to a call of a verbal disturbance at a local auto parts store. Upon attempting to contact the suspect, a gun battle ensued and Officer Stasyuk was mortally wounded. Officer Robertson sustained gunshot wounds as she engaged the suspect in a close quarters gun battle inside the store, before the suspect fled from the scene and was captured a short distance away. Officer Robertson attempted to render first aid to Officer Stasyuk, however, he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

Officer Stasyuk was a four-and-a-half year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, whose aspiration was to serve his community in Rancho Cordova as a police officer. A highly energetic, friendly, and motivated police officer, Mark was an asset to his community, RCPD and SSO, and the law enforcement profession, and his loss will never be forgotten.

Chief Hampton was present at the recent Rancho Cordova Hotel Watch meeting to discuss current issues that may affect local hotels in our city. The event was attended by several members of local hotels, as well as the RCPD POP Team and our community prosecutor from the District Attorney’s office.

These meetings are held every four months and are a great opportunity to learn what law enforcement is doing in collaboration with hotels to help keep our guests safe within the city. If you are interested in attending future meetings, please keep an eye on our social media sites, as well as the Rancho Cordova City website for upcoming meetings in 2027!

Congratulations to RCPD Officers Cassidy Knowles and Hector Aguilar on their well earned promotion to FIeld Training Officer (FTO)!

Field Training Officers are the foundation of our first line of police responders. They are responsible for training new officers in the policies and procedures of field operations, report writing, and department & community expectations. As new officers are assigned to RCPD, they are assigned to an FTO for their training process. There are several training phases the new officers must successfully complete, each one lasting at least four weeks and with a new FTO on a different shift. Upon successful completion of their final phase, officers are given the opportunity to act as the lead officer in a 2-man unit, working solely on their own and with no input or instruction from their FTO partner, unless a dire circumstance presents itself.

FTO’s also act as lead officers on their shifts and/or may take up the role as Officer In Charge (OIC) when a supervisor is unavailable.

Being promoted to FTO is a distinct milestone in the career of any officer and is something to be proud of. Congratulations to our newest FTO’s and their commitment to the community they serve!

RCPD wants to remind everyone to exercise safety and road awareness when travelling on public roadways. Case in point, RCPD recently responded to a report of a vehicle vs. pedestrian accident at a large intersection within city limits. Upon arriving on the scene, RCPD units blocked the lanes from approaching traffic to provide a safe area for first responders to provide aid to the involved parties. RCPD patrol units turned on all their overhead emergency lights and directional arrows to safely signal approaching traffic into adjacent lanes.

While providing first aid to one of the people involved in the earlier accident, an errant driver did not heed the emergency lights and lane closure, and collided with the rear of both patrol vehicles, causing moderate damage to both RCPD units. Thankfully no injuries were sustained by the original parties, RCPD officers, or the inattentive driver.

Please remain vigilant when driving and pay attention to the road and ensure your focus is on the roadway and other drivers, and not on distractions that may pose a safety risk to others!
