🚨As the school year begins and students head back to the classroom, the Rancho Cordova Police Department (RCPD) reminds parents and residents to follow the speed limit and be extra careful driving through school zones. We are committed to keeping our community safe and as such, RCPD Traffic Unit officers will be out and visible in school zones as the school year begins in order to keep our students safe.🛑
🌟
RCPD wants to offer the following tips to stay safe around schools:
🌟
👉 Slow down and follow the speed limit.
👉Adhere to school policies and procedures for dropping off and picking up students.
👉Watch for children running to, getting on, or getting off the school bus.
👉Avoid blocking the crosswalk
👉For parents with children walking or biking to school, teach them safe walking and riding behaviors, such as looking both ways before crossing the street, using sidewalks when available, and crossing at marked crosswalks with stop signs or signals.
👉If you are behind a school bus with a stop sign and flashing red lights, drivers MUST stop and remain stopped while the red flashing lights are on. Drivers in both directions must stop on any two-lane road without a median or a center turn lane.
🌟
Please help keep our community safe by adhering to these school safety tips!

🎒📚 Welcome Back, Students! 📚🎒 The first day of school is always an exciting one, and our School Resource Officers were there to help make sure students started the year off on the right foot!
🌟
SROs Dela Pena and Ball spent the first day of school visiting and welcoming students at Cordova High School, Riverview Elementary, and Mills Middle School. From greeting students and staff to helping provide a safe and positive environment, our SROs were there to show that they’re not just at our schools to keep them safe — they’re there to build relationships and be a familiar, friendly face for students.
🌟
We’re proud to have SRO Dela Pena and SRO Ball representing our department in our schools and helping foster strong connections between law enforcement, students, families, and school staff.
🌟
Here’s to a safe, successful, and exciting school year! 🏫💙

Recently RCPD received a call of a burglary in progress at a local apartment complex. With help from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office helicopter (STAR), a subject was seen leaving the area and detained by arriving officers.
🌟
Interviews with witnesses stated the subject was seen attempting to gain access into an occupied apartment via the kitchen window, and after having no success in doing so, he broke the adjacent sliding glass door to gain access to the apartment. While attempting to gain entry, the subject was yelling and threatening the occupants with physical harm. The occupants did not know who the subject was and/or why he had targeted their apartment.
🌟
Witnesses and the victims positively identified detained subject as the same male who had attempted to make unauthorized entry into the occupied apartment. The subject, who has been arrested multiple times before and is on probation for felony offenses, was arrested and booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail for several new felony charges.
🌟
Thanks to the cooperation of the witnesses and observational capabilities of STAR, this suspect was found and removed from our community before this incident, or any others, escalated any further!

🚨 The Rancho Cordova Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI), and Driver’s License Checkpoint Friday August 7, 2026 from 7 PM through Saturday, August 8 at 2 AM at an undisclosed location. 🚨
🌟
DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.
🌟
Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Officers will also check for proper licensing and will strive to delay motorists only momentarily.
🌟
RCPD reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational ma*****na are legal, driving under the influence of ma*****na is illegal.
🌟
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
🌟
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

This July and beyond, RCPD encourages drivers to follow the speed limit and “slow the fast down.” 🚨
🌟
Speeding remains a leading factor in deadly crashes and is consistently the top safety concern among surveyed California drivers, according to the 2025 California Traffic Safety Survey. Even small increases in speed reduce the time drivers have to react and significantly increases the force of a crash. Slowing down is a simple, effective way to prevent tragedies on our roads.
🌟
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 11,288 people died from speeding-related crashes in the U.S. in 2024, accounting for 29% of all traffic fatalities that year. In California alone, 1,139 people were killed in speeding-related crashes in 2024.
🌟
“Speeding is dangerous and puts everyone at risk,” said RCPD Traffic Bureau Sgt. Day. “Your daily choice to drive within the speed limit protects everyone in our community. Risky driving behaviors like speeding continue to cause preventable tragedies on California roads.”
🌟
Drivers can take simple steps to prevent speeding:
🚗 Plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
🚙 Follow posted speed limits, especially in school and work zones.
🚗 Drive at a speed that is safe for the conditions around you. Adjust your speed for changing weather, traffic and road conditions.
🚙 Avoid aggressive driving behaviors like tailgating or weaving through traffic.
🌟
Crashes have severe and lasting consequences, and slowing down is one of the most important actions you can take to keep everyone using roads safe. By
taking precautions and driving at safe speeds, we can make sure everyone in the community reaches their destination safely and helps to keep Rancho Cordova safe!
