This is unacceptable. Our neighbor department who supports not only Avon but when needed mutual aid to Randolph have been working with out a contract for way to long. Please support Avon Firefighters IAFF Local 3857 in this fight for a fair contract.

As of today, Avon Firefighters Local 3857 is 575 days without a contract.
If we are ”setting the record straight” we might as well hear from both sides. Town of Avon 11/20/2025

Just because other unions have accepted agreements with the Town, that has nothing to do with our firefighters. All unions in Town have their own roles and responsibilities unique to their department. That is no different with our full-time department. We are trying to reduce the turnover in our department. To do that we need to be competitive with surrounding fire departments.

We do thank the Town and the residents for the recent increase in staffing. This increase was sorely needed for life safety reasons, not only for our firefighters, but for the citizens and visitors to our Town. As of now we have 4 shifts of 1 captain and 3 firefighters, but we are disappointed in the decision to drop to 1 captain and 2 firefighters per shift when there is a vacancy on a shift (vacation, sick, etc.). We believe this reduction is unsafe and creates a serious life-safety risk on every call we respond to.

Apparatus purchased by the Avon Fire Department are paid for through the department’s ambulance account. This account is used for large purchases such as fire engines, tower/ladder trucks, and ambulances. Purchases from this account must be approved at Town meeting and have no burden on the taxpayers of Avon.

We are unsure what the Town meant by “mandated advance training opportunities”. We train every shift. From firefighting tactics with apparatus and tools to keeping our EMS skills sharp by training on EMS protocols and procedures.

We have always bargained in good faith and have always bargained for the good of Avon. We will continue to do our jobs to the best of our abilities. Our door is always open for discussion.

Respectfully,
Avon Firefighters Local 3857

In the wake of the deadliest fire in Massachusetts in 40 years, concern has grown over some fire department staffing levels.
