What’s crazy to think… the haze you're seeing traveled roughly 340 miles to get here.

Minnesota as over 10 confirmed wildfires burning up in the Boundary Waters area — that's northeastern Minnesota near the Canadian border. About 55,000 acres are burning right now. On July 6th, a Lighting storm started a wild-land fire. With the added heat and drought it just kept growing. Governor Walz called in the National Guard. With the assistance of the Guard they successfully evacuated somewhere between 6,000+ people. The Boundary Waters wilderness is currently SHUT DOWN.

Canada is ALSO on fire. Hundreds of wildfires are burning right now — most are out of control. Ontario and the northwest provinces are under fire. With fires to the north and fires to the northwest, and a big high-pressure weather system is pushing all that smoke down out of the upper atmosphere to ground level.

This is why you can literally see smoke and smell the fire all the way here in Wisconsin — even though the closest fire is 340 miles away.

Could these fires spread down HERE??
Our landscape just doesn't support that kind of wildfire spread. That doesn't mean Wisconsin never gets wildfires. We've actually had almost 500 small ones this year! Mostly brush fires in the spring.

The AIR QUALITY is terrible at the moment;

🏠 Stay inside as much as you can — close your windows!
- Run your A/C on recirculate
- Elderly, children pregnant mamas, anyone with asthma or heart problems — please be extra careful and Check conditions at airnow.gov

The good news? Rain might show up this weekend and push this mess out. 🤞 Stay safe out there, everyone.

Wildfire smoke has reduced air quality to unhealthy levels across much of Wisconsin. Consider moving outdoor activities indoors or limiting your time outside until air quality improves.

Please see the National Weather Service post below for additional information.

Air Quality Advisory remains in effect until at least Noon CDT today for Canadian wildfire smoke. This will likely be extended into Friday or beyond and there remains uncertainty as to the southwest extent of smoke. The air quality today will be in the Very Unhealthy (purple) category for eastern Wisconsin, with Unhealthy For Sensitive or All Groups (orange/red) in southwest Wisconsin. The risk of health effects is increased for everyone with Very Unhealthy air quality, especially for sensitive groups. Prepare for the smoke impacts today and beyond.
