Urging passage of the Dental Care for Veterans Act (H.R. 210)

On May 20, DAV testified before the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, urging passage of the Dental Care for Veterans Act (H.R. 210). This legislation would expand dental coverage to all service-connected disabled veterans and help address longstanding gaps in oral health care.

Current VA dental eligibility rules are limited and do not provide comprehensive dental coverage to all enrolled veterans. As a result, many veterans with serious oral health needs, including conditions associated with service-connected disabilities or their treatment, can face barriers to timely care. This can contribute to chronic pain, worsening oral health, and broader health complications.

Improving oral health is a medical imperative:

Poor oral dental health is associated with chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Nearly 25% of veterans receiving VA care have diabetes, and 11% have heart disease—rates that underscore the importance of having access to preventative and restorative dental care.

Veterans with heart disease who do not receive dental care face substantial higher annual costs associated from missed workdays compared to those who see a dentist.

Your voice is critical. We urge Congress to address this longstanding gap in veteran healthcare by mandating VA to provide dental care in the same manner as all other medical services.
