July 11 — The Act of 1798 and the Reestablishment of the Marine Corps ⭐

On this day in 1798, President John Adams signed the Act of 1798, officially creating the Navy Department and reorganizing the Marines as a permanent force—hereafter named the United States Marine Corps.

Following the American Revolution, the Continental Marines and Navy had largely been disbanded. This legislation restored the Corps, placing it under the authority of the Secretary of the Navy and formally establishing its commissioned structure. It also marked the creation of The Marine Band, a lasting symbol of Marine Corps tradition.

From 1799 until 1921, July 11 was observed as Marine Corps Day, later changed to November 10 to honor the founding of the Marines during the Revolutionary War era.

This moment solidified the Marine Corps as a lasting institution in American military history. Semper Fidelis. 🇺🇸

The Black Hills Detachment received this from the daughter of one of our late Marines. Semper Fi Chuck.

Before Dad (Chuck Johnson) passed we talked about what should we do with Dad’s old Marine dress blues.
The Edgemont Museum did not have any Marine uniforms and together with them and Dad, we decided they should be donated to them. That is what we did with it after he passed last November.
They recently sent us these pictures of the new display of his and other’s uniforms.
If you ever go through Edgemont, SDak, stop in and peruse their exceptional museum.
Thank you, Edgemont Museum!
If you zoom in you can see a little about him in the framed collage below.
On behalf of my brothers (Dan, Roger, Brad, Jeff) and myself,
thank you to the wonderful people who take such pride in such a neat step back in time.
