VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Erick called Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity because he wanted to give back.

Once a week, Erick comes to our ReStore to lend a hand and help keep things organized. This summer, he took on organizing the shed in our yard—and he didn’t do it alone.

His child joined him, helping along the way and learning what it means to give back to the community.

Sometimes, volunteering is about more than the time you give. It’s also about the example you set.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄.

Yesterday, 75–100 people gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of East Creek Village—a major milestone for Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity and our community.

RCS Construction, in partnership with Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity, helped make this exciting moment possible as years of vision, planning, partnerships, and community support came together to create new opportunities for affordable homeownership.

The support behind East Creek Village comes from federal, state, and local resources, along with generous donors and community partners.

Senator Mike Rounds was present and shared remarks about this important initiative. Former Executive Director Scott Engmann, who stepped down from his position in July and now serves as a Consulting Advisor for Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity, was also there, along with community leaders, partners, and supporters who came together to celebrate this milestone.

East Creek Village is more than a development. It’s an investment in families, in neighborhoods, and in the future of our community.

The groundbreaking is just the beginning. Now, we get to watch what grows.

1️⃣7️⃣ young people came to Rapid City, spent a day serving, learned about affordable housing, and left with a different perspective on their own communities.

The First Christian Reformed Church group joined us in July for a day of volunteering with Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity—and yes, 1️⃣7️⃣ youth!

Their day started with a tour of our office, helping them connect what they learned during orientation with the work Habitat does in our community. With such a large group, they split into two teams: one volunteered at the ReStore while the other helped clean a Habitat home.

Lisa, the church’s youth director, shared how meaningful it was to see the young people grow closer throughout their experience and how opportunities like this help them recognize the needs of others.

“Sometimes we take things that we have in our hometown for granted, and then we see others who are in need. That takes them back home to be more compassionate and caring about others.”

Their curiosity, excitement, and energy filled our office that day!

Thank you, First Christian Reformed Church, for spending the day with us and showing what it means to serve with compassion. We’re grateful for the energy, curiosity, and joy you brought to Habitat—and for the impact you made in our community.

Affordable housing starts with more than a house. Sometimes, it starts with a conversation about where and how we build.

Have you ever wondered how local zoning decisions affect affordable housing?

Zoning can influence things like the types of homes that can be built, the size and density of neighborhoods, and how land is used. These decisions can have a real impact on the availability and cost of housing in a community.

At Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity, we're focused on helping families achieve affordable homeownership. That means we also pay attention to the bigger picture—including the local policies and community decisions that can make it easier or harder to create affordable housing opportunities.

When we talk about affordable housing, we also need to talk about the policies and decisions that shape where and how we build.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Sometimes volunteering is simply about finding a way to help that works with your life.

Our volunteer spotlight is someone who first reached out to Habitat nearly 25 years ago, hoping to volunteer alongside her youngest daughter. Although the timing didn’t work out, she reconnected with us after moving back to Rapid City in 2021.

Today, she serves on our Fundraising Committee and has been especially involved with the Hearts for Habitat Dinner & Auction, helping with the Dessert Dash. 🍰
As a social worker, she has always had a heart for serving her community. She may not have the schedule to be on a construction crew or provide meals, but she found another way to make a difference.

And I love what she shared about volunteering: “I can do these time-limited fundraising tasks that support the organization, resulting in housing for participants.”

That’s what I love about our volunteers. There isn't just one way to serve. Whether you have a few hours, a special skill, or simply a desire to help, there is a place for you at Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity.
