HIGHWAY 13 FIRE UPDATE: Local, state, and federal firefighters cooperated to contain the fire 100% overnight using aircraft, heavy equipment, and engine modules. Crews remain on scene and the public can expect to see fire engines and personnel along the road. FOR EVERYONE'S SAFETY, PLEASE DRIVE SLOWLY ON HIGHWAY 13 between County Road 440 and County Road 442.

If you fly, we can’t. Flying drones or UAS within or near wildfires without permission may affect aerial firefighting and could cause injury or death to firefighters and hamper their ability to protect lives, property, and natural or cultural resources.

Fire danger remains very high across the Upper Peninsula. Prevent fires by exercising good judgement and extra caution. Learn how to be safe with fire at https://www.nifc.gov/fire-information/fire-prevention-education-mitigation/wildfire-prevention

At approximately 1:29 p.m. yesterday, we were dispatched by Delta County Central Dispatch for mutual aid with Nahma Township Fire/Rescue. Garden Township Fire Rescue also responded from Delta County. This was for multiple fires being reported along the side of Federal Forest Highway 13 a few miles north of County Road 442. We responded with 9 firefighters, our brush truck, both tenders, our engine, and our high volume pump. Our high volume pump was setup at Dana Lake for the filling of water tenders and brush trucks. Ensign firefighters operated on a southern section of the fires attacking and containing the area.

At approximately 3:39 p.m. while still up Highway 13, we were requested for mutual aid with Masonville Township Fire Department for a brush fire at an address on Old Wilsey Bay at the end of the Stonington Peninsula. Our brush truck and two tenders responded. This fire was small in size and contained quickly. We were on the scene for an hour.

At approximately 3:46 a.m. today, we were dispatched by Delta County Central Dispatch to an address on W.5 Road in Ensign Township for a fire behind a TV that was put out by the homeowner. What we found behind the TV stand was a fire that was caused by a failed extension cord. We did some overhaul of the fire area and cleared the scene at 4:49 a.m.

Attached below is an excellent flyer for extension cord use and safety. As a reminder, please check your smoke detector batteries and test them regularly for proper operation.
