Dear Raritan Borough
PSE&G is continuing to upgrade its ageing gas pipes throughout New Jersey as part of the next phase of its Gas System Modernization Program, GSMP 3. We are replacing 525 miles statewide of cast iron and unprotected steel gas mains with strong, durable plastic piping and/or coated steel, which are much less likely to have leaks and release methane gas.
These upgrades will reduce carbon emissions, improve safety in the event a service line is damaged, and provide better support for the use of high-efficiency appliances, ensuring PSE&G can continue to provide a safe and reliable gas system well into the future.
Continuing with the project commenced under the extension of the prior phase of the Gas System Modernization Program (GSMP 2 Extension), PSE&G has updated the project map previously provided on 4/13/2026 and will continue with the project as reflected in the new map per the GSMP 3 filing. That work is expected to commence on 5/11/26. The anticipated start date may change due to weather or other operational circumstances.
The GSMP 3 program was approved by the BPU to begin in 2026 and is expected to conclude mid-2029. The duration of a project is 12 to 18 months. More specific dates for the map for your municipality will be provided prior to the start of construction. Typical work hours are between 7 am - 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with potential for weekend work. However, schedules are estimates, weather dependent and subject to change.
During the construction phase of the project, we will dig trenches to lay new pipes. At the end of each day, the trenches will be backfilled with temporary asphalt and plates will be secured. As with any construction project, residents will experience changes in traffic patterns, loud noise, and the presence of heavy equipment and machinery. We will coordinate with the municipal departments to ensure the proper safety protocols are in place, as well as developing the appropriate traffic plans to minimize inconveniences during the project.
PSE&G will schedule service appointments with homeowners/businesses to relocate gas meters to the outside of the premise, connect to the new service line, and reconnect/relight all gas appliances located inside of property.
After the service work is completed, PSE&G will reseed and restore grass areas impacted by work. Concrete or asphalt openings will be restored when final restoration is scheduled.
Residents will be notified prior to and during construction according to the schedule below:
• 4 – 6 weeks prior - Initial gas construction notification letters sent via USPS
• 7 days prior - Gas construction notification door hangers delivered to the property
• 3 days prior - Automated phone and email notifications sent to PSEG customers
• Weekly updates - Automated phone and email notifications sent to PSEG customers
We have included a map showing the streets where work will take place. In addition, the list of streets will be available on our website at www.pseg.com/gaswork .
To support effective coordination, we respectfully request notification of any known or planned municipal infrastructure improvements within the proposed work area.
Please feel free to contact me directly should you have any questions or require additional details. There may be coordination meetings scheduled soon, and I will keep you updated.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
Sincerely,
PSE&G Gas Construction Team
