Raritan Borough Receives Grant from AARP for Improvements at Frelinghuysen Park

Raritan Borough has received a $15,000 grant from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP)
Community Challenge program. The grant will be used to install a new shaded seating area at Frelinghuysen Park near the tennis and pickleball courts. The seating will consist of benches with backs, under the shade structure that will be attractive to the Borough Seniors. Funding will also be dedicated to constructing a rain garden, which will provide natural drainage through native plants and soil for stormwater runoff at the tennis court. The project will be coordinated by the Raritan Borough Environmental Commission, with support from the Department of Public Works and Recreation Committee. The Borough plans to install the shade structure, seating, and rain garden in late summer into early fall. The AARP Community Challenge grant program is part of the nationwide AARP Livable Communities initiative that helps communities make immediate improvements and jump-start long-term progress in support of residents of all ages. Since its debut in 2017, the AARP Community Challenge has invested $24.3 million in 2,100 livability projects, with a focus on meeting the needs of adults age 50 or older, in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Washington, D.C. In 2026 the AARP Community Challenge program doubled its annual investment and awarded more than $8 million in community-improving grants.

A clean windshield may look like a small comfort…😢😢

Today, the road looks cleaner… but the silence is louder.

Fewer insects means fewer pollinators.
Fewer insects means fewer birds.

Not every loss is loud.
Some disappear quietly… until one day, we finally notice.
