WARNING: Social Media Real Estate & Rental Scams

The Colfax County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving fake real estate and rental listings posted on TikTok and other social media platforms.

Scammers are stealing photos of actual homes in our local area, posting them at "too good to be true" prices, and tricking victims into wiring upfront deposits, application fees, or rent before ever seeing the property.

Key Red Flags:

No In-Person Showings: The "seller" or "landlord" always has an excuse why they cannot meet face-to-face.

Pressure for Instant Pay: Demands for money via peer-to-peer apps (Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, cash apps) before stepping inside the home.
Unrealistic Prices: Rent or sale prices far below local market value.
Protect Yourself:

Verify Ownership: Confirm property details through official public records or trusted real estate agencies.

Never Pay Upfront: Do not send money or application fees to someone you have only met online.

See It First: Always tour the inside of a property in person before exchanging funds.

Active Wildlife Incident — Lambert Hills / Cimarron Area

The Colfax County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), alongside the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMGF) and the New Mexico State Police (NMSP), is actively responding to the Lambert Hills vicinity to locate a large bear reported in the area.

Residents, property owners, and travelers in and around the Lambert Hills and Cimarron area are urged to take immediate precautions:

Do Not Approach: Under no circumstances should you attempt to approach, corner, or feed the animal.

Report Sightings: If you have seen this bear or observe it in the area, do not investigate yourself. Immediately contact Raton Central Dispatch at (575) 445-2704 (or 911 for immediate emergencies) to report the precise location and time of the sighting.

We pause to honor the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost, pay tribute to the incredible bravery of the first responders who rushed toward danger without hesitation, and stand in solidarity with the families who carry their memory forward every single day.

Rayado Mesa Fire Update - 8/7/26

Over the past week, response crews have been putting in good work to extinguish the Rayado Mesa Fire, which is currently burning on the mesa, southwest of Miami.

The fire is currently 934 acres and 82% contained. This incident acreage also includes the nearby Birthday Fire, which started July 26, and combined with the existing Rayado Mesa Fire on July 27.

Due to hot temperatures and pockets of active fire behavior, flames and smoke will be visible near the fire area.
