Today, the Ravenna Township Fire Department had the honor of recognizing four Ravenna City Police officers and three Ravenna Township firefighters for their outstanding actions on July 11 that ultimately resulted in a life being saved.
When someone suffers a sudden cardiac arrest, every second matters. For every minute that passes without CPR, the chance of survival decreases by approximately 10%. Early recognition, immediate bystander CPR, rapid defibrillation with an AED, and advanced life support are all critical links in the Chain of Survival.
On July 11, a male driver traveling through the City of Ravenna suffered a cardiac arrest, causing his vehicle to leave the roadway. Another vehicle immediately stopped, removed the patient from the vehicle, and began CPR without hesitation.
Shortly thereafter, officers from the Ravenna City Police Department arrived and seamlessly took over high-quality CPR. Their quick actions, combined with the use of an AED, resulted in three life-saving shocks being delivered before Ravenna Township Fire Department personnel arrived.
Our firefighters and paramedics continued the exceptional care already in progress by providing advanced cardiac life support interventions before transporting the patient to the hospital. The patient’s pulse was restored, and after receiving definitive medical care, he survived and has since returned home to his family.
This outcome is a powerful reminder that survival from cardiac arrest is truly a team effort. It begins with courageous bystanders willing to step in, continues with well-trained law enforcement equipped with AEDs, and is carried forward by EMS providers delivering advanced medical care.
