Today, the Ravenna Township Fire Department had the honor of recognizing four Ravenna City Police officers and three Ravenna Township firefighters for their outstanding actions on July 11 that ultimately resulted in a life being saved.

When someone suffers a sudden cardiac arrest, every second matters. For every minute that passes without CPR, the chance of survival decreases by approximately 10%. Early recognition, immediate bystander CPR, rapid defibrillation with an AED, and advanced life support are all critical links in the Chain of Survival.

On July 11, a male driver traveling through the City of Ravenna suffered a cardiac arrest, causing his vehicle to leave the roadway. Another vehicle immediately stopped, removed the patient from the vehicle, and began CPR without hesitation.

Shortly thereafter, officers from the Ravenna City Police Department arrived and seamlessly took over high-quality CPR. Their quick actions, combined with the use of an AED, resulted in three life-saving shocks being delivered before Ravenna Township Fire Department personnel arrived.

Our firefighters and paramedics continued the exceptional care already in progress by providing advanced cardiac life support interventions before transporting the patient to the hospital. The patient’s pulse was restored, and after receiving definitive medical care, he survived and has since returned home to his family.

This outcome is a powerful reminder that survival from cardiac arrest is truly a team effort. It begins with courageous bystanders willing to step in, continues with well-trained law enforcement equipped with AEDs, and is carried forward by EMS providers delivering advanced medical care.

Please join us in recognizing the outstanding efforts of:

🚒 FF/Medic Noah Rose
🚒 FF/Medic Jess Hays
🚒 FF/EMT Elizabeth Valetta

👮 Ptl. Chris Dynys
👮 Ptl. Heather Waldeck
👮 Sgt. Josh Erb
👮 Ptl. Caleb Gilliland

To these first responders and to the bystanders who took immediate action before help arrived, thank you. Because of your professionalism, teamwork, and commitment to serving others, someone is alive today.

This is why CPR training, AED availability, and strong partnerships between our public safety agencies matter every single day.

A huge thank you to the Ohio Fire & Emergency Services Foundation and the Enbridge Community Safety & Paramedicine Grant Program for their generous support of the Ravenna Township Fire Department!

Through this partnership, our department received 60 carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to help keep our community safe, and two of our members were sponsored to attend the Ohio Fire Chiefs’ Officer Development Conference, providing valuable leadership training that will benefit both our department and the residents we serve.

The CO detectors are available free of charge to Ravenna Township residents. If you would like one for your home, simply stop by the fire station and we’ll be happy to provide one while supplies last.

Recently, we had the honor of celebrating the continued growth of the Ravenna Township Fire Department family. Over the past several months, we have welcomed four full-time Firefighters to our ranks and recognized the promotions of one Lieutenant and one Captain. We celebrated these milestones together during a swearing-in and pinning ceremony surrounded by family, friends, and fellow firefighters.

🔥 Firefighter Jess Hays is a second-generation firefighter who joined Ravenna Township with 12 years of experience.

🔥 Firefighter Tristan Ohler came to Ravenna Township with two years of firefighting experience.

🔥 Firefighter John Stanley is a third-generation firefighter who recently graduated from the Akron General Paramedic Program.

🔥 Firefighter Alex Varner has proudly served Ravenna Township for the past two years and recently transitioned from part-time to full-time.

⭐ Lieutenant Jimmy Crevar has dedicated 13 years to Ravenna Township Fire Department through both part-time and full-time service. After serving full-time with East Cleveland Fire Department, he returned home to Ravenna Township. A second-generation firefighter, Jimmy was proudly pinned by his father, retired Macedonia firefighter Jim Crevar.

⭐ Captain Keith Gemberling has served Ravenna Township Fire Department for 13 years, including the past two years as a Lieutenant. He was proudly pinned by his son, Keith, who is a familiar face around the station and enjoys stopping by trainings to cheer on his dad.

Congratulations to each of these dedicated firefighters on this well-deserved milestone. Thank you for your commitment to serving the residents of Ravenna Township.
