The Rawlins Fire Department and Rawlins Police Department responded to a small grass fire on the east side of North Higley near the intersection with Aberdeen today. Thanks to a quick response from both departments, the fire was safely contained and extinguished.

While the exact cause remains unknown, it is believed the fire may have been sparked by something dragging along the roadway, such as a chain. In total, five “starts” of the fire were identified along Higley Boulevard, all suspected to be connected to the same source.

As we head into a dry summer, conditions can allow fires to start and spread quickly. Even a small spark can ignite dry grass, especially on windy days. Please ensure chains are secured, avoid parking on dry vegetation, and use extra caution with any equipment or activity that could create sparks.

If you see a fire, report it immediately by calling 911. Thank you to the Police Department and to the community members who quickly called it in and, when it was safe to do so, assisted.

On Tuesday, April 14th, 2026, at approx. 11:30 am the Rawlins Fire Department (RFD) responded to a house fire in the 200 block of East Jeffers. By 1:30 pm the fire was contained. No civilians or firefighters were injured. Thanks to the Carbon County Fire Protection District Rawlins Division, Rawlins Police Department, Carbon County Sheriff’s Department, Rocky Mountain Power and Black Hills Energy for their assistance and quick response. The fire investigation was a combined effort between Rawlins Fire Department and the Wyoming State Fire Marshals office, represented by the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives (ATF). The cause of the fire is unintentional and most likely linked to a lithium battery.

Please remember that anything with a lithium-ion battery, such as phones, laptops, e-bikes, power tools, and more, can become a fire hazard if it’s not charged safely. Always use the charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer. If the cord only works when you bend it just right, it’s time to replace the cord. If the battery gets old and doesn’t hold a charge, or gets warm while charging, it’s time to replace the battery.
