Whether you’re camping, boating, fishing, or enjoying a backyard fire pit, summer is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy everything Ohio has to offer.

As you head outdoors, keep safety in mind:
🔥 Never leave campfires unattended and fully extinguish them before leaving or going to bed.
🚤 Always wear a life jacket while boating or near open water.
🌊 Keep a close eye on children around pools, ponds, and lakes—even strong swimmers need supervision.
🧯 Keep water or a shovel nearby anytime you have an open flame.

A little preparation goes a long way toward making summer memories safe ones!

In an emergency, knowing CPR or how to use an AED can make the difference between life and death. Immediate action before first responders arrive can dramatically improve survival rates during cardiac emergencies.

This week is a great reminder to:
✅ Learn CPR
✅ Familiarize yourself with AEDs in your workplace or community
✅ Encourage friends and family to get trained too

At Northwestern Fire District, we believe lifesaving knowledge is one of the most powerful tools a community can have. You never know when you may be in a position to help save a life.

Interested in learning CPR? Northwestern Fire District can provide CPR training upon request for community groups, organizations, and workplaces. Contact us to learn more about scheduling a class.

In a fire, every second counts—and having a plan can make all the difference. Take time to sit down with your family and make sure everyone knows how to get out safely.

Here are a few key things to include in your plan:
✅ Know at least two ways out of every room—a door and a window if possible
🏠 Have a meeting spot outside where everyone will gather
🪜 Plan for second-story exits—consider a fire escape ladder if stairs become impassable
🚫 Never go back inside once you’ve exited

Practice your plan regularly so everyone feels confident and prepared. A few minutes of planning today could save lives tomorrow.

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage and selflessness have secured the freedoms we enjoy every day.

As we spend time with loved ones this Memorial Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of the day and honor those who gave everything.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

As the grass starts growing, it’s time to fire up the mower—but it’s also a time when we see an increase in preventable injuries. At Northwestern Fire District, we want to remind everyone to take a few simple precautions to stay safe while keeping your yard in shape.

Here are a few key safety tips:
✅ Wear proper footwear—closed-toe shoes with good traction are a must
👀 Clear the yard first—remove sticks, rocks, and debris that could become dangerous projectiles
🚫 Keep hands and feet away from blades—never try to clear a jam while the mower is running
🧒 Keep children and pets at a safe distance while mowing
⛽ Refuel safely—always turn the mower off and let it cool before adding fuel

Lawn care is part of the season—but injuries don’t have to be. A few extra minutes of caution can prevent a trip to the emergency room.

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine! ☀️

This month, we recognize and thank the first responders who answer the call—day or night—to serve and protect our communities.

From firefighters and paramedics to law enforcement and dispatchers, their dedication and courage make a lasting impact when it matters most.

At Northwestern Fire District, we’re proud of our team and grateful for all first responders who serve with professionalism and care every day.

Please take a moment to say thank you to a first responder. ❤️

As the weather warms up, it might be tempting to start cleaning up yards and burning debris—but burn bans are still active in Ohio during the month of May.

This ban applies to burning yard waste, trash, and debris, and is in place to help prevent wildfires, especially during dry and windy conditions.

Even small fires can quickly get out of control this time of year, so please do your part to keep our community safe by following the current restrictions.

If you’re unsure about what is allowed, take a moment to check local guidelines before burning.

Let’s work together to prevent fires and protect our community. 🔥

In the early days, many volunteer firefighters learned the job on the fly—gaining experience during calls and from seasoned members of the department. In the 1960s, programs like the TNI training sessions shown in this photo helped change that by introducing more structured instruction and core firefighting skills before facing real emergencies.

These trainings focused on essential skills like hose handling, ladder work, and pump operations, helping volunteers become more effective—and safer—on the fireground.

This photo captures one of those early sessions. In the foreground are Eldridge Thomas, Virgil Poling, and Chief Don Stout, who served as the instructor. Behind them stand the firefighters who made up the first officially trained group of firefighters in the district.

We’re grateful to these early volunteers whose dedication helped build the foundation of the Northwestern Fire District we know today.
