On this Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember all the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. We also extend our deep gratitude to our veterans, past and present, including William Valliere, Reading’s Veterans Services Officer.

Before tonight’s important vote on Article 14, following the Town budget discussion, I decided to attend the spring season opener for the Reading Unified Basketball Team.

What I witnessed was truly inspiring. Every kid on the court played with great energy and skill, and the rotations every four minutes allowed all participants to be actively involved. The pace, teamwork, and flow of the game felt just like a real basketball game.

Best of all, the score was tied 70-70 with just six seconds remaining when Reading pushed the ball down the court and hit a buzzer-beater to win 72-70. It was an absolutely incredible finish!

I’m so glad I got to see firsthand what Article 14’s funding will help support. I hope the article passes unanimously tonight and sends a clear message that “All Means All” in Reading.

The weather cooperated beautifully for this morning's groundbreaking ceremony for the Reading Center for Active Living and Pickleball Courts on Symonds Way. Thank you to everyone who helped make these exciting milestones possible for our community.

Here are my thoughts on tomorrow’s April 7th election. I strongly encourage you to take an hour and watch the RCTV Select Board meeting I linked. Ask yourself whether what you’ve been hearing lines up with reality. That meeting shows how local government is supposed to operate and hopefully how it will move forward.

At last night's candidates forum, the MMA (Massachusetts Municipal Association) vote issue came up once again, and once again a candidate who claimed to have done their research got it completely wrong.

People are free to dislike my meeting style or disagree with decisions I've made. That's fair game. But I won't stand by while a clear, verifiable falsehood is repeated as fact when the truth is right there in black and white.

To be clear: The MMA does not contact Select Board chairs directly about voting matters. They reach out to Town Managers. In this case, Matt received an email from the MMA three days before the vote, but it was never forwarded to me until after the vote had already taken place, leaving no time to place the item on the agenda for discussion. That short of a notice regardless, is not helpful to 351 cities and towns in similar positions.

Separately, Mrs. Herrick contacted me with less than 24 hours' notice asking to cast a vote. After reviewing the materials, I declined because (1) I oppose new taxes on residents and (2) the full board had not yet taken an official position. Despite that, Mrs. Herrick voted anyway. This prompted the entire Select Board, including Mrs. Herrick, to unanimously agree the vote was unauthorized and to rescind it.

The full details, including all relevant correspondence and context, are clearly documented in the publicly available Select Board packet from February 10, 2026. I simply ask that anyone claiming to have "done the research" actually review the public record before making assertions.

I spoke to Tony after the forum last night regarding all of this and he and I had a great conversation.

I also submitted the clip from last night's forum to https://voterspotlight.com and it got approved. I encourage everyone to have a look at the materials yourself there.

Documenting the public record, one statement at a time.

When the Reading Select Board must step forward as a voice of reason on statewide issues, it signals that meaningful change is overdue at the state level.

Enough with the deflection and excuses. The Legislature should honor the clear mandate from voters who overwhelmingly approved Question 1 in November 2024, authorizing the State Auditor to conduct an audit of its operations.

If funding remains the barrier, perhaps revenues from the Fair Share Amendment (the so-called millionaires tax, approved by ballot in 2022) could be allocated to support this audit, given its focus on accountability and public resources.

Failing that, selective enforcement of ballot initiatives raises serious concerns about which voter-approved measures are deemed "legal" enough to implement. After all, for any question to appear on the ballot, it must first be determined legally valid.

I strongly urge immediate action to honor the democratic process and the will of the voters. I also encourage other cities and towns across the Commonwealth to join Reading in taking a principled stand on this issue.

A local Massachusetts town board is stepping up for Bay Staters who approved the audit of the state Legislature, demanding House Speaker Ron Mariano and Senate President Karen Spilka open their books.

On Monday, March 23rd at 7 PM, the Select Board will interview Jayne Wellman for the Town Manager position. We encourage residents to submit any questions they’d like us to consider. Her résumé is available from the Select Board office, and the agenda is on the town website.

On Monday, March 23, 2026, at 7PM, the Select Board will interview the current Acting Town Manager, Jayne Wellman, for the position of Town Manager. A copy of Ms. Wellman’s résumé is available from the Select Board office upon request.

While only Select Board members will be permitted to ask questions during the interview, members of the public are encouraged to submit questions they would like the Board to consider asking Ms. Wellman to [email protected].

Board members may, in their sole discretion, incorporate such submissions into their questions. More detailed meeting information may be found on the posted meeting agenda here: https://www.readingma.gov/331/Select-Board

I wanted to address an issue from last night's meeting and offer my sincere apology to my fellow board members, and particularly to Karen Herrick.

During discussion of the town manager contract agenda item, I noticed an email from a resident that contained language very similar to what we were about to discuss, information that should not have been public. Based on the absence of any related details in the meeting packet, I incorrectly accused someone of leaking our confidential discussions.

Upon review, I now realize there was a motion in the materials that referenced aspects of our potential discussion, which I had overlooked. Additionally, upon rewatching that portion of the meeting, I see that I did not open the floor for public comment on this item as I did for the others.

While I stand by my comments regarding a previous similar incident, that does not justify my error here. I was wrong in this case, and for that I apologize unreservedly.

I will also address this matter directly at our next board meeting.

Thank you.
