On Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at about 4:00 PM, a homeowner contacted emergency services stating that there was fuel oil on their basement floor. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found approximately 200 gallons of heating oil that leaked from the tank. A contractor performing cleaning and video inspection for AVMA confirmed what appeared to be heating oil flowing in the sanitary sewer system. Emergency services quickly notified the AVMA staff. Emergency crews quickly stopped more fuel oil from entering the sewer system through a basement floor drain. They worked with AVMA staff and the consulting engineer from Entech Engineering, to minimize the impact to the wastewater treatment plant biology and to prevent contamination of the Antietam Creek. AVMA wishes to thank our community partners, Lower Alsace Fire Co. and Mt. Penn Fire Co. for their efforts and dedication to our collective customers.

Did you know that if you have a leaking toilet you will be paying for water and sewer charges on all water used. A leaking toilet can waste an average of 200 gallons of water per day. This can add up to 6,000 gallons per month. Depending on the severity of the leak, this could be a significant amount of water and money wasted. This water enters our sanitary sewer system and is treated as wastewater. Please be proactive and check your toilets now! We are trying to save you money. Credit will not be given for leaking toilets.

Thank You.

The top picture is the final addition to our fleet improvement. A new truck body was installed with additional safety features. This was a much needed improvement to our fleet. The camera van was a 1986 and the flushing truck was a 1980. The purchase of the new flushing truck, video truck and new truck body were obtained through a grant. Every penny was spent wisely!

With more snow on the way, we would like to remind everyone to keep your sewer clean-outs clear of snow. This will help our staff in case of sewer emergencies or sewer back-ups at your home. This will also prevent sewer gases from entering your home.

Thanks,
AVMA Staff

The Antietam Valley Municipal Authority recently borrowed three million dollars to perform necessary plant upgrades. This upgrade will be broken up into three phases.

The first phase of this upgrade will include converting the anaerobic digester to an aerobic digester.

Anaerobic digestion is a biological process that breaks down organic materials without oxygen to produce biogas. (Biogas is a renewable energy source made of methane and carbon dioxide.) The methane is currently disipating into the air. By switching to an aerobic process, it will eliminate this methane being discharged and will be creating a healthier environment.

The decision was made to switch the system to an aerobic process after our aging boiler was deemed unrepairable. This boiler was used to keep the sludge at a temperature of one hundred degrees to keep the micro-organisms active, breaking down solids in the treatment process.

Advantages of Aerobic Wastewater Treatment:

- There is less odor since no foul-smelling by-product gases are produced and released into the air

- Higher effluent quality - Treated water is directly discharged into the environment due to the efficiency of nutrient removal

- Lower costs for the facility

- Simple construction

- No danger of explosions or suffocations for employees

- Simple operation

When the first phase of the project begins, updates and pictures will be posted showing the progress.
