Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day

On April 24, 1915, the Ottoman Young Turk government arrested more than 200 Armenian political and community leaders, including teachers, writers, religious figures and intellectuals in Constantinople (Istanbul). Most were subsequently executed.

This date is often considered as the day on which the intentions of the Armenian Genocide were first exposed. Each year, April 24 commemorates the 1,500,000 men, women and children who were murdered in the genocide between 1915 and 1923.

IWitness brings educators and their students together at the intersection of genocide studies, diversity and inclusion education, and the development of critical literacies needed in the 21st century.

in 1994, the Rwandan Genocide against the Tutsi began. During this approximately 100-day slaughter, Hutu extremists murdered more than 800,000 of their fellow Rwandans, mostly belonging to the Tutsi minority.

In 1994, between 500,000 and one million Rwandans were massacred in a genocide when the Hutu extremist-led government launched a plan to wipe out the country’s entire Tutsi minority and any others who opposed their policies.

Across Ukraine, innocent people are suffering under the relentless Russian government attacks that began six days ago and have been roundly condemned across the globe.

Today’s bombing of the Babyn Yar Memorial is a stark reminder that among those suffering are Holocaust survivors who have lived through the horror of war before.

As we embrace the Ukrainian people in their hour of need, we must also continue to honor and protect the memory of the 33,771 people murdered by the N***s at Babyn Yar over two days in 1941.

We pray that all Jewish communities and other civilians in the region remain safe.
