Today, on Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, we remember all the little lives that ended far too soon. ๐Ÿค
The babies we dreamed of, planned for, and loved long before we ever had the chance to meet them. The babies who were here for such a short time, but changed our lives forever.
Today is a day to recognize their lives, acknowledge the heartbreak of their absence, and remind every family who has experienced this loss that their baby matters and will never be forgotten.
Who are you remembering today? We would love to remember them with you.

About 3,400 babies died suddenly and unexpectedly in the United States in 2024, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly 75% of these deaths involved unsafe sleep practices.

October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month, a time to promote safe infant sleep practices and reduce the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths.

Johns Hopkins Childrenโ€™s Center experts Dr. Mary Beth Howard, emergency medicine physician, and Dr. Barry Solomon, director of the Division of General Pediatrics, offer the following tips to prevent sleep-related infant deaths:

๐Ÿ˜ด Always place babies to sleep on their backs at night and during naps. Parents and caregivers should keep their babyโ€™s crib or bassinet in the same room with them until they are at least 6 months old.

๐Ÿ˜ด Babies should sleep in their own safe sleep space (crib or bassinet). Babies should not share beds with other children or adults.

๐Ÿ˜ด Ensure cribs and bassinets have a firm, flat sleep surface with a fitted sheet.

๐Ÿ˜ด Soft bedding, including blankets and pillows, toys or other objects should not be in a babyโ€™s sleep area.

๐Ÿ˜ด Do not smoke or allow smoking around your baby.

The early years matter, and the Hamburg Public Library is here to help families make the most of them! ๐Ÿ˜ Read on to learn more about our offerings for little learners and their caregivers! โฌ‡๏ธ

๐Ÿ˜ Our Storytime program features developmentally appropriate practices and routines including a variety of stories, songs, crafts, and fun learning activities, with special focus on early literacy. This gentle introduction to structured learning is open to any interested child and their caregiver. Activities are planned with preschoolers in mind. Caregivers, please plan to participate with your children to enhance their experience.

๐Ÿ˜ Our monthly Stories and Stations program consists of a very brief storytime followed by learning stations for children and their caregivers to explore together. During the stations portion of this program, a staff member from the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) will be available as a resource for interested caregivers who have questions about early childhood development topics or want to find out how BCIU services support young children and their families.

๐Ÿ˜ Our bi-monthly Little Hands Playtime is a fine-motor-focused open playtime for young children. The less-structured format of this program allows little ones additional opportunities to practice social-emotional skills as they engage with peers during free play. Caregivers can enjoy some conversation and connection with one another as they monitor their children.

๐Ÿ˜ Our bi-monthly Grab-and-Go Kits offer take-home learning and fun to busy families. Kits will continue to be available at both the Hamburg Public Library (on our old porch) and at Redner's Market in Hamburg (on the front wall near the cash registers). Kits include a themed craft and fun learning activity for caregivers and children to complete together when it fits their schedule. Please take only one of each kit per child. Note that there will be no in-person youth programming on the dates listed as Grab-and-Go Kit on the schedule.

๐Ÿ˜ Feel free to save the digital schedule posted here or stop by the Library to pick up a paper copy.

โ€ฆSoooo, who is joining us?! ๐Ÿ˜

October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month

We remember the babies who were lost in pregnancy.
The babies who were born sleeping.
The babies who were carried but never brought home.
The babies who came home, but could not stay.
The babies whose time with us was measured in minutes, hours, days or weeks.
And we remember the parents.
The mothers and fathers who had already imagined a lifetime with their baby.
The siblings who lost someone they may never have had the chance to know.
The grandparents, families and friends who carry their own grief.
October gives us an opportunity to talk about that loss.
To say their names.
To share their stories.
To remember them.
To acknowledge the profound impact of losing a baby.
Throughout this month, we will be sharing stories, remembrance, information and support and creating space for conversations that can sometimes feel too painful to have.
Together, throughout October, we remember.
