One of the best parts of our job is connecting with the youngest members of our community. Last week, we spent a couple of mornings at Serendipity Early Learning Center, talking with their preschoolers about fire safety. The kids asked great questions, got a hands-on look at our truck, used a real fire hose, and left with big smiles. Thanks to Serendipity for having us out.

Crews were out today clearing snow away from fire hydrants to ensure quick access during emergencies. Heavy snow buildup can delay operations when seconds matter. Thank you to the Public Works Department for their assistance today, and to the residents who helped by clearing hydrants near their homes as well.

The Reading Fire Department is asking for your help with the winter weather expected to move in this evening. As snow begins to fall, fire hydrants in your neighborhood may quickly become buried or blocked.

If you have a hydrant near your home, please take a few minutes to check it and clear it out.

What to do:
• Remove snow and ice from the hydrant
• Clear a space at least 3 feet around the hydrant
• Clear a path from the hydrant to the street

Additional Winter Storm Tips: Please keep sidewalks and steps clear for emergency access, make sure your house numbers are visible from the street, and avoid parking in the roadway when possible so plows and emergency vehicles can get through. Check on elderly neighbors and use space heaters safely (keep them 3 feet from anything that can burn)

Every second counts during an emergency. Having hydrants cleared ahead of time can save valuable time if we need to access water during a fire.

Thank you for helping us keep Reading safe!
