ng has made a dramatic difference in the lives of immigrants in New Jersey and beyond by ensuring that immigrant voices are heard in policy debates, by assisting immigrants with challenging immigration cases, and by changing the narrative about immigration issues to influence policy. We offer legal services to immigrants who are seeking to reunite with families, or in need of protection. Our staff organizes in immigrant communities, training emerging leaders and ensuring that those people most affected by immigration policy are advocates for change. The complicated political reality in Washington has expanded a system of detention and deportation that shatters families. In the face of proliferating myths and anger against immigrants, the Immigrant Rights Program responds through presentations and media work.

“Today’s Fifth Circuit Court decision gives current DACA recipients a brief chance to breathe a brief sigh of relief,” said Itzel Hernandez, a DACA recipient and Immigrant Rights Organizer for AFSC’s Red Bank, New Jersey office. “Yet, my heart aches for the 1.3 million DACA eligible folks throughout our country whose chance at protection from deportation continues to be delayed. After a decade of being protected by the DACA program, I am tired of the anxiety and uncertainty that every legal challenge presents. I’m tired of feeling afraid to lose my work permit and I’m tired of the fear of deportation. But I also know that the people responsible for our situation are not the courts but congress and their inaction. It is time for our representatives to put forth a pathway to citizenship not only for DACA recipients but for our loved ones, our friends, and community members, all 11 million.”

WASHINGTON, DC (October 5, 2022) – Today the Fifth Circuit Court ruled against the continuation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. From 2012 to the present, the DACA program provided temporary relief from deportation to almost 800,000 people who came to the U.S. as child...

Today, November 11, is Veteran’s Day in the United States, a day to commemorate the service of members of the armed forces. Previously known as Armistice Day, the date marks the end of World War I, referred to at the time as “The War to End All Wars.” In the spirit of the observance of Armistice Day, we lift up the lives lost and impacted by armed conflict before and since that moment in history and continue our work toward a world without war.

Twenty years ago today, the world changed. The tragic attacks of 9/11 and their aftermath brought with them a cascade of reactions that in many ways created our contemporary landscape: the expansion of mass surveillance, the militarization of the border and restriction of movement, the magnification of xenophobia, and of course the “War on Terror” that has languished over the past two decades. This somber milestone is an occasion to reflect on the challenges our work strives to meet, and it is a day to remember. Today we remember the nearly 3000 people who died in the attacks in New York City, Washington, DC, and Shanksville, PA, as well as the countless other lives lost or forever changed on battlefields, in detention centers, and on the paths we share around the world. It is for them and so many like them that we continue the work of building a just and lasting peace.

❗There's a bill that could ban New Jersey from entering into new, renewed, and expanded ICE contracts. Tell New Jersey's elected officials: immigration detention is a cruel and inhuman practice. It must end. Passing S3361/A5207 is the first step.
