The church of Christ that meets at Red Boiling Springs has a history in Macon County dating back to the turn of the Twentieth Century. In the early 1900s, there was no meeting house and the Christians met in each other’s homes. Those ancestors of faith included: Charlie and Rosetta Bean Slate, Jim and Mary Jackson Bean, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Clark, the Mack H. Jenkins family, Mr. John Baker, Mrs. Stella Meador, Mr. Bedford Wilson and the John Clark McClure family.
Then the Christians began meeting in a log house owned by “Bug” Knight located across the road from the Donoho Hotel. It was called the “Bug House”.
About 1910, T. B. Larimore, a gospel preacher and leader in the American Restoration Movement, held a gospel meeting at Cloyd’s Chapel (across the road from the Cloyd Hotel). Shortly, after that the group built a meeting house. The lumber used to build this house came from John Clark McClure’s mill located at Rose Hill. Mr. McClure was the father of Edna Smith and the grandfather of Sandra Gale Smith and Sarah Ann Birdwell. The building was bricked and remodeled in 1963 when a new auditorium was built on its left side. The original building is still in use today as classrooms.
A part of the original structure was a bell tower. The bell was rung to call folks to worship services. During the 1963 construction, the bell and its tower were removed and the bell was placed on the ground, where it sat for several years. Some kids tried to steal it once but they couldn’t move it. It even survived the flood waters of 1969. In the early 1970s a frame for the bell was built in the front yard. It still hangs there today.

VISION 2020 INC AWARDED A TENNESSEE AMERICA 250 GRANT FROM THE TENNESSEE COMMISSION FOR THE UNITED STATES SEMIQUINCENTENNIAL

GRANT WILL BE USED FOR RESTORING THE OLD RBS BANK BUILDING

Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee, March 9, 2026 - Vision 2020 Inc is a recipient of a $10,000 grant for Tennessee America 250 initiatives from the Tennessee Commission for the United States
Semiquincentennial. The grant award will be used to help restore and rehab the old Red Boiling Springs Bank Building with the view of creating a community Heritage Museum, to tell the story of the Red Boiling Springs Community from its earliest days.

The State of Tennessee made available funding to be administered by the Tennessee State Museum, on behalf of the Commission to support statewide America 250 activities.

The second round of the Tennessee America 250 grant program was a highly competitive process. In total, the Commission received 365 applications, totaling $6,364,017 in requests. The Commission has made full or partial awards for 194 grants across the state, representing 73 counties, for a total of $2,267,058 awarded. A complete list of second round Tennessee America 250 grantees, counties and amounts is posted at www.tn250.com.

“I am inspired by the excitement across the state to commemorate our nation’s 250th anniversary,” said Ashley Howell, Executive Director of the Tennessee State Museum and Chair of the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial. “This year will be filled with exhibitions, programs, festivals, and preservation of our local and state history. We hope that these projects inspire Tennesseans across the state to engage with the anniversary in 2026.”

"As our nation prepares to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, it is especially meaningful to preserve the local stories that helped shape our country,” said State Rep. Kelly Keisling. “I’d like to thank the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial and the Tennessee State Museum for their support in helping preserve Red Boiling Springs’ history. The Tennessee America 250 grant will not only allow the community to restore a historic landmark, but it will also create a space where future generations can learn about the origins, people and events that shaped Red Boiling Springs into the tranquil and historic community it is known for today.”

The Tennessee America 250 Project Support Grants and Community Support Grants had maximum request amounts of $20,000 and $25,000, respectively. All projects funded in the second round must be completed by April 30, 2027.

The Weight of Comfort
My grandchildren’s generation is big on weighted blankets. The blankets are supposed to calm nerves, reduce stress and most of all improve sleep.
This was not a problem for my generation of kids. We had grandma’s quilts. All cotton with heavy cotton batting. When grandma put you to bed, you better be in the position you wanted to stay in for the rest of the night, because when she threw on those “forty-leven” quilts you weren’t moving until someone rescued you in the morning.
Women quilted for lots of reasons. It used up scraps of fabric, worn out cloths (think ancient recycling), provided warmth and was a creative outlet. But the best reason, it was a social event.
Quilting Bees/Circles happened in nearly every Southern community. Women gathered around a large frame and made stitches while they visited, passing on recipes, advice to the younger women and stories of how it “used to be.”
The Red Boiling Springs church of Christ women gathered around quilting frames to make hundreds of quilts for newlyweds, for families that had lost their homes in fire or flood, for those who had nothing. Some of those women were Decie Knight, Louise Wilson, “Aunt Bill” Hagan, Roxie Clark, Pearline Browning, Hazel Pitcock, Oda Parkhurst, Hettie Witcher, Lucille Jenkins, Carnell Kelling, Nettie Glover, Pearl York, Odessa Clark, Vera Ann Sadler, and . . .
