Updated Monday, 6/2, at 3:34 pm. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has extended the Air Quality Alert through noon on Wednesday.

Whenever there is an Air Quality Alert, the DNR will not activate burning permits. Remember, burning permits are required for fires larger than 3 feet in diameter or 3 feet high. Campfires are discouraged.

For updates on fire danger and burning restrictions, visit: mndnr.gov/burnrestrictions

A band of heavy smoke from Canadian wildfires is moving into Minnesota from behind the cold front. Air quality levels will reach the maroon air quality index (AQI) category, which is hazardous for everyone, in the northwest. Parts of northwest and north central is expected to reach the purple AQI category, which is very unhealthy for everyone. Northeast, central, and south central Minnesota is expected to reach red AQI category, which is unhealthy for everyone. Southwest and southeast Minnesota is expected to reach the orange AQI category, which is unhealthy for sensitive groups. Please make safe recreation choices!

For more information on the air quality alert, sensitive groups, and health effects, visit the MPCA's current air quality webpage. https://www.pca.state.mn.us/air-water-land-climate/current-air-quality-conditions
