News Release: Forest Tent Caterpillars

Red Lake Forestry is aware of several pockets of severe defoliation from the forest tent caterpillar near Red Lake and Ponemah. Forest tent caterpillar is a native species, with severe defoliation events happening on a 10-15 year cycle. Populations typically peak late May through mid June. Defoliation from forest tent caterpillar usually cause little damage to healthy, vigorous trees, as most hardwood trees develop a second set of leaves by mid to late July.
