And there’s no better place to feel that than on the Beartooth Highway.

Above the tree line, surrounded by towering peaks, alpine lakes, endless sky, and snowbanks in June, the Beartooth has a way of making the world feel both massive and wonderfully small at the same time.

This isn’t just a scenic drive. It’s the kind of place that makes you roll the windows down, turn the music up, and completely lose track of time.

We’re not saying the Beartooth Highway WILL close due to weather, but we are saying the mountain has a history of making its own rules.

Weather is expected this weekend, and at 11,000 feet that can mean:
☀️ sunshine
🌨️ snow showers
💨 drifting snow
🚧 temporary closures
sometimes all in the same afternoon.

So if you’re planning a trip:
**KNOW BEFORE YOU GO**
Check road conditions before heading up https://www.511mt.net/ (PRO TIP! If the highway is closed in WY, MT will signal that with a RED hazard sign that you can click on and see where the closure is) Be flexible with mountain weather
Pack layers because “summer” is a suggestion up there

Just another completely normal day on the Beartooth Highway

Where else can you:
❄️ drive between giant walls of snow
🐾 get judged by a marmot from a rock pile
📸 stop every 30 seconds for another photo
☀️ feel sunshine and winter at the exact same time

The Beartooth doesn’t just give you views it gives you stories. From curious little mountain locals to snowbanks taller than vehicles, every turn feels unreal this time of year.

Today, we remember that Memorial Day is more than the start of summer travel season.

It is a day to honor the men, women, and service animals who gave their lives in service to our country and the freedoms we enjoy every day.

As travelers take in these mountain views, winding roads, and wide-open skies, we’re reminded that places like this and the freedom to experience them came at a cost carried by generations of heroes and their families.

Today we pause in gratitude for those who never made it home, and we remember their sacrifice with respect and humility.

Wherever your Memorial Day takes you, may there also be a quiet moment of reflection.

That’s right… the legendary Beartooth Highway is officially OPEN ALL THE WAY and road trip season has entered the chat. A month of snow, plowing, weather watching, and countdown posts have all led to this moment.
NO red squiggle.
The switchbacks are calling.
The snowbanks are towering.

The Beartooth Highway is NOW OPEN to the MT/WY state-line!

While the full highway opening slated for Saturday, May 23rd, you can officially make your way up the mountain for those jaw-dropping views, fresh alpine air, giant snowbanks, and that “I can’t believe this place is real” feeling. 😍

😎 Endless photo opportunities

Basically… spring in Montana with a side of winter.

Please remember:

[5/22/2026 - 7:55 a.m.] The Beartooth Highway (US 212) is now open to Vista Point on the Montana side. Travelers will be able to drive from Red Lodge to Vista Point, where they will need to turn around and return to Red Lodge. Our crews are continuing to work on clearing the new snow in an effort to open our side to the stateline later today, but you should monitor our MDT 511 map for current Montana-side road condition/closure information: 511mt.net.
A couple of really important notes:
-Crews make every effort to keep the road plowed and open, but due to the high elevation on this mountain pass, unpredictable weather conditions may cause temporary closures (yes, even during the summer!). MDT 511 (511mt.net) is your gold source for current information about the status of the highway on our side.
