Foster care, decoded: kinship care.

Kinship care is when a child who cannot stay with their parents is cared for by a relative or a close family friend: a grandmother, an aunt, a former coach, a neighbor the child already knows.

It keeps a child inside a familiar circle during the hardest season of their life.

In Texas, kinship caregivers can become licensed through an agency like Benevolent House. Licensed caregivers receive the foster care daily rate, which is typically higher than unlicensed kinship payments, along with training and ongoing support.

Somewhere in North Texas tonight, a child needs a bed that is already made.

Benevolent House brings foster parent training to you online, and we stay with you after placement: monthly visits, an after-hours on-call number, and a team you can reach.

You do not need to have it all figured out. You need a safe place for a child to sleep, a steady home, and the willingness to learn.

Start the conversation at benevolenthouse.org (on Instagram, the link is in our bio) or call (214) 774-4871.

Try this tonight: the same three things, in the same order.

A child who has lived through change learns to watch for what comes next. Which adult is coming. Whether dinner is coming. Whether tonight will look like last night.

When it does, the watching can stop. Predictability tells the body it is safe, and a body that feels safe can sleep.

So pick three things. Bath, book, lights. Or whatever your three are. Do them in the same order for one week and notice what changes.

What are your three? Comment below.

The Path, step 1: the inquiry.

Every licensed foster family started in the same place, with one online form. It asks who you are, who lives in your home, and why you are interested. Nothing about it is binding.

When you submit it, a member of our team reads it and reaches out to talk through what comes next. No pressure, no script.

Each Monday we will walk the path one step further, so there are no surprises.

Ready for step 1? Apply online at benevolenthouse.org (on Instagram, the link is in our bio).

The real answer: no, you do not have to own your home.

You can rent a house or an apartment. What matters is that the home is safe, that it passes a health and safety inspection, and that there is adequate sleeping space for a child.

You also do not have to be married, and you do not have to be wealthy. Texas asks that you be at least 21, financially stable, and ready to learn.

If a question has been keeping you from asking, ask it. Comment below or call (214) 774-4871.

Not everyone can foster. Everyone can help a family who does.

When a child arrives, often with a few hours' notice, the family needs the basics that night: diapers, wipes, a blanket, pajamas in the right size, a car seat.

The Benevolent House Resource Center keeps those on hand for foster and kinship families in North Texas. It is stocked by people like you.

What welcome looks like.

It is a new toothbrush, waiting in the cup before anyone asked for it.

A child arriving at a new home notices the small things first. The toothbrush says: we knew you were coming. There is room for you here.

Foster parents, what did you set out before your first placement arrived? Tell us below.
