As we wrap up Severe Weather Awareness Week and look forward to the warmest time of the year, here are a few tips on how to protect yourself and your family during extreme heat.

- Never leave anyone, including pets, in parked vehicles.
- Limit time outside, and stay indoors, in an air-conditioned space, if possible.
- Stay hydrated; don't wait to drink until you're thirsty.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes.

Reminder: Statewide tornado drills are scheduled at 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. today.

If a tornado is possible or actively occurring near your location, seek shelter in spaces like a basement or central interior room/hallway without windows on the lowest level of the building. If you can, get under a sturdy piece of furniture (like a heavy table) or a mattress/sleeping bag. Try to protect your head from flying debris.

Turn around, don't drown. Never drive through a flooded road. Six inches of water will reach the bottom of many cars, and two feet of rushing water is enough to sweep away even SUVs and pick-ups. Many flooding deaths occur when drivers go around road barricades on flooded roads.

When a thunderstorm strikes, the best place to be is inside, either in a sturdy, substantial building or a fully-enclosed, metal-topped vehicle. However, as a last resort, if you are stuck outside without shelter during a thunderstorm, try to avoid elevated areas, objects that conduct electricity, isolated trees, bodies of water, cliffs/overhangs, and lying on the ground.

- Advisory: Issued for weather conditions less serious than a warning. The event could be occurring, likely to occur, or about to occur. Use caution.
- Watch: Issued when weather conditions are favorable for hazardous conditions to develop. Be prepared and ready to act.
- Warning: Issued when dangerous weather conditions are actively happening or about to happen. Take shelter.
