On Monday 11 volunteers cleaned up our gardens. Just look at the beautiful yellow dwarf iris and Virginia bluebells!

A beautiful autumn morning at Discovery Garden. Bright colors remain in some gardens while the grasses are in full bloom! Even a few bumblebees are foraging. Have a fun and safe Halloween! 🎃

The county fairs, State Fair, and Labor Day have come and gone but the Discovery Garden continues to look awesome! Beautiful colors, lots of butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Our resident squirrels are excited to sample the mini white pumpkins. They’ll give you a good scolding if they’re trying to eat and you are bothering them! Take time to enjoy the garden!

Discovery Garden is looking splendid! Full of color, scent, and flying activity! Wrens, Hummingbirds, butterflies & dragon flies are so busy wand there’s the soft sound of water flowing from the bubbler. Come and visit us! (photos are by volunteer steward BethAnn Langlois)

Many very pretty colors in bloom at the Discovery Garden. Spotted a Great Black Wasp the other day on the Gooseneck Loosestrife in Moon Garden. The Great Black Wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus) is a large, solitary, non-aggressive wasp. They can be up to about 1.3” long!

Only the females have stingers. They are generally much more interested in finding their next meal than annoying humans. Lots of active hummingbirds and the wrens are very talkative. Enjoy!

The daylily path is ready to greet you as you enter the Discovery Garden. Learn about the cover crops in Cook’s Garden. Thank you to Vermillion Elevator for the seed donation!
A thank you to several DG volunteers for their Herculean effort to clean up the area surrounding the signage. It’s weeded and mulched. Particular weedy areas were covered with card board to squelch the weeds and topped with mulch.

Discovery Garden is coming to life! Hummingbirds are busy zipping around and there’s a friendly little wren in the bird house.
Colorful flowers are beginning to bloom. Check out the Cover Crops in Cooks Garden, they’re growing like crazy!

So many unexpected and sweet surprises appear in the Discovery Garden. Found this hanging on one of the arborvitaes in Faerie Garden on May 2nd.

Spring has sprung at Colvill Park and the Discovery Garden. The City of Red Wing with the ICWC crew replaced the rotted timbers of Sun Garden! Plants were removed and re-planted. Soil added and a topping of fresh pine straw. Hopefully we’ll see new life in the garden as the season unfolds. We discovered lots and lots of spring bulbs in the soil.

It’s been a tough season with lots of losses at the Discovery Garden but there’s still bright color going into autumn. Hard to hold a good zucchini back!!

Resilient Red Wing is sponsoring a local pollinator garden biking or self-guided tour this coming Saturday, August 3rd from 9:30 to 11:30am. The Colvill Discovery Garden is one of the gardens on the tours. A Goodhue County Extension Master Gardener will be at the Discovery Garden to answer your garden questions.
